Auckland rides?

Okay, I'm really getting back into biking now and would like to get some ideas on some decent rides around the Auck area. It seems I either do the Clevedon, Mareitai loop or the Kaukapakapa - Wellsford ride. By the way, did the later on Sunday morning and the roads are all sealed now, just a couple of small parts with light gravel.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Suggestions? Get a dual purpose bike - opens up alot more options

Was thinking about this when I got back into biking but I decided to get a dirt bike and a road bike. Best of both world's!

There is some nice riding to be done out west. Huia, Little Huia, Piha, Kare Kare, etc. Nice riding out Beachlands, Maratei way. Up north you can do Still Water, Old State Highway - east coast bays.

It really depends on what type of riding you feel like :-):

Well I think there's a difference between a ride that you could do in a day and a day ride.

Were you for instance to go from Auckland up to Paihia in one day you could do it, but it would literally take all day with very few stops at all.

What's the point in going for a ride if you can't stop for a breather and look around every now and again?

That ride is only a 100 kms or so further than doing a Coro Loop at 236kms each way ...there is more to life than going up and down 22, but that is just me. :slap:

..By day ride that could be part of the day or all day.?

I was going to put obviously not in the sea,but thought it unneeded,i was wrong..perhaps i should of put including a ride in a boat.

Good move,but a street legal dirt bike opens up a lot more options,lets you explore many more roads....even if they don't go anywhere....

That's why I decided to get a CRF250x so I could make it street legal if I wanted. I've modded the bike to the max but kept all the bits so I could change it back. In the meantime it's like a r but with electric start.

Thinking of doing it in 06 for some adventure trails.

I did Auckland to Wellington and back in a day. With time for sightseeing. Took me a week to recover, but, wouldn't really recommend it. But Auckland to Paihia and back in a day is fairly easy.

That's the way! That was my plan for the DT230,it was to be my trail bike and adventure bike,and also a bike to put on a trailer and take somewhere like Coromandel and do the top roads without having to ride it all the way up.The XT is supposed to be my Do All bike...but it's off the road and the DT230 is doing road duty,and it sure is fun blasting around on such a light powerful bike,but I want my SuperSluggard back!

hmmm... you know the ride through beachlands, maraetai, clevedon. From there, you either head to papakura, or you can turn at Clevedon up Twilight Rd. That ride is short for me, probably only 80 ish k.

Also at Clevedon you can turn left and head round Kawakawa Bay. At Kauaia (I think, the Fish and Chips place) you can turn inland and head through Mangatawhiri and what not, turning off the main route shortly after that. From there you carry on, and at some point (I'm really good with country road names and towns, as you can see

) there is a road with a Hunua Falls sign. Head down there and it takes you back to Clevedon.

From there you can go to papakura, twilight rd, or back along the coast (my pick, but also my favourite stretch, and I now know it really well)

That would probably be 250ish, and 3-4 hours, depending on stops obviously.
