Bugger, read that Madboy and I didn't find anything offensive. I'm disapointed.

Car noise test to settle arguments
    24 February 2006
    By ESTHER HARWARD

A noise test to encourage police and vehicle testing stations to be braver about taking vehicles with loud exhausts off the roads will be launched in two to three months.

The Transport Ministry is setting up sound meters in six "boy racer" hotspots across the country –- including the Waikato –- to prevent legal battles with drivers over whether cars meet noise rules.

Arguments over whether a vehicle is too noisy now come down to an interpretation of a land transport rule, Vehicle Equipment 2004. This rule says a vehicle's exhaust noise must not be "noticeably or significantly" louder than manufacturers intended.

Because the rule is based on a subjective assessment, police and testing stations have been put off tackling noisy vehicles in case they are challenged in court.

Subjective assessments will continue to be carried out.

Vehicles considered too noisy can be taken to one of the six specialist testing stations for an objective test –- at a cost of up to $100.

–- The test will measure sound levels 0.5 metres from the tailpipe.

Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven said noise meters would be imported in the next few weeks and the ministry was finalising locations.

Testing stations will also be encouraged to invest in the equipment –- at a cost of between $12,000 and $14,000 –- which they would be able to recoup over time by charging for its use.

The objective noise test will be followed by a new rule setting maximum noise limits for different vehicle types under section 7.4 of the Land Transport Road User Rule 2004.

A draft would be brought out mid-year for consultation, with the law coming into effect six to 12 months after that.

Noise control lobby group Noise Off has called for a 90 decibel limit on exhausts.

Hm, so building supply companies can expect a run on pink Batts then.

What's the engine out of? - '89 Fairmont...near enough,we'll use that to test against.

They are going to push for a set level, then it's like a tyre tread depth - measure, pass or fail...simple as that.I can't wait to buy my $14,000 sound metre....if I use it once a month and charge $5 each time the money will be rolling in and I'll be able to buy a new bike with the cash I slip in my back pocket.....

Nah,it'll be.....''Gosh,that sounds a bit noisy mate,I can't make a call on that (meaning I'm too fucking scared to stick my neck out) You'll have to take it for a noise test for $60,then come back here with the test result''

Remember, you're only as old as the woman you feel.
