The Mighty VTZ250 Street fighter project chapter 1

Well I got my first legal ride. thanks Wasp!

I not only wanted a fun bike but one I could learn to turn a spanner on. So now I have a 1988 MC15 Honda VTZ250. I thought it looked a good candidate for a project bike, kinda tough looking and not uneconomical to rebuild.

First job was to ride it for a couple of days, identify the weak spots and start the plan.

Firstly the Timing chains and tensioners need replacing fairly soon. Told it was a challenging job but not too hard for someone with my attitude. Where would be the best place to purchase components for an MC15?

After that the list goes as follows.

    1) Rear drum brake is a bit sloppy, and makes a ping noise if pressed hard.
    2) Better tyres, back one has squared off and tread has seen better days.
    3) Front right indicator comes on solid when the headlight is on. Still flashes when used but is unwarantable.

Well thats the start of the work which will be done in the next couple of months to make the bike a bit of a tighter unit. I have grander customisation plans to come.

Any advice on the above would be greatly appreciated from people who have done these things before.

My buddy who was going to help with the timing chains has had to go out of town (family trouble) but has compressioned the bike and given it the once over, told me was basically solid, a good deal and worth doing.

Sweet as you got a good deal there........

the front indicators are supposed to come on solid when the headlight comes on. The are like brake lights...... ya get what i mean..... so pull the bulb outa the side that dont work and get a new bulb.....

A good place to buy Honda parts is Econohonda ph 07-884-8810. Malcolm has been great to buy parts from for our VT. He knows a heck of a lot about the VT's.

If you want my VTZ to cannibalise, I'm teetering on the edge of chucking the P.O.S off a cliff. I'm going to have one more crack at getting it roadworthy, and if that doesn't work, then I'm open to offers.

your indicators will have three wires im geussing, or the one that is running with the headlight does. try checking to see if the are all connected. my bros650 had indicators that ran continuosly untill i fitted some mini inicators....

ducati lover it is nothing to do with the wires but is simply because the permanent on filiment in the bulb blew and the other did not when i dropped it on the grass at christmas.

el dopa, i am glad that you finally decided to discuss the vtz with me.....
