Naivete or mendacity?

I am looking for a late 70s early 80s project bike that I can return to its former glory and outfit and use as a tourer.

So, I see an ad for a one owner 1980 classic, that been under a bike cover for 5 years without use (rego lapsed), priced at $5500.

After ascertaining over the phone that it has only done 45,000km, has original paint and running gear and only needs some exhaust work/repairs to get a rego and warrant, I decide to go and have a look.

Well, I've now seen it - best way to picture it is to imagine what a bike would look like if had been lying in a creek for 5 years.

Surely, the price in the ad was incorrect, I say - but nooooo...........

I like SOHC Honda 4's but the prices are really out there. especially for bizarre POS's.

problem with the above is the cam shafts run straight in the heads ie no bearings

any shit in the oil or oil starvation and its curtains for the head

Almost all (not quite all) OHC bikes have the cams running directly in the head.Shitty design, but common

Certain high quality Yamaha's use ball bearings for the camshaft...ah,we'll never see those days again,when Japanese designers tried to do a good job and chop sing the price.

If a cam and head are worn it's a pretty good indication of poor maintenance - lack of oil changes with crap oil.

The design is sound. People just need to do regular filter changes and oil, and it wont be a problem.
Look at the alternative, Harleys have roller bearings at the big end of the conrod, and when you use synthetic oil, the ball bearings dont have enough friction to roll them, they flat spot, then you get movement, then you end up with a conrod poking out of the block!
Which design works better?
