I have some articles about maintaining girder forks somewhere, the main thing (other than making sure they are straight in all dimensions, and not twisted - easily overlooked, that last one ) is to line ream the bushes. Modern Oilite bushes give much better results I under stand than the originals, but be sure to soak them in oil for 48 hours before fitting.

EDIT: There y'go Messrs Chris and Dave, couple of good ideas for articles there.
I still have my old MkVIII's but the safety glass is delaminating and the elastic has gone. Plus I wear glasses now so... sigh! These guys have a good range but still expensive for what they are. http://www.ace-cafe-london.com/dis.htm

We used to use old welding goggles (one piece plasticy things) with interchangeable lenses - cheap like $5 or summat.

Hand shifting is a real knack and something I have not done for years and years. Twist grip bikes are OK but the old throttle lever / manual advance / retard I found a bit of a challenge. Especially if you also had to remember to give the engine a squirt of oil every now and then from the hand pump! I never liked foot clutches though! Bloody stupid idea!

    Cheers

The writing in BRM is weirdly amateurish, They subscript the titles of articles with fake dictionary entries,
    e.g.motor scooter n. a light motor cycle....wtf?

They can drop the custom bike crap too.

I buy whatever is interesting, though I have subscribed to Cycle World and before that Cycle since 1982. I really like Performance Bikes (UK) and classic motorcycle mechanics (UK) and Classic Bike (UK). I buy the occasional Two Wheels and Motorcycle Trader or Kiwi Biker depending on whether the cover grabs me or not. I also have picked up a couple of oddball ones over the past year: an issue of backstreet heroes (if Im honest because one of the tits out models was hot) and a TWO and a Fast Bikes.

    motorbike magazines are cool.

I have bought BRM in the past when I see it, and I know Glen personally, but generally I prefer the Brit mags: Bike, or Two Wheels Only. Buying both of those each month is a tad expensive though.

BRM and Kiwi Rider are aimed at different readers. I would have thought BRM was aimed at an older audience...

just talking about subscription prices, PB by subscription worked out at about $13.50 an issue, and the newsstand price was about $14, so I didnt think it was worth it. Cycle World last time I renewed was down to about $7 kiwi an issue and arrives two months before it hits the newstand here, at $15 an issue. Its cheap enough that even if the mag was crap you wouldnt care, but it has some brilliant writing in it: Kevin Cameron, Peter Egan etc rule.

THey are a diverse mag as well: road, dirt, touring, technical. I look forward to it every month, oh yes.

The Kiwi mags are cool so are the Aussie ones. I'm an ad hoc buyer and often get the Pommie Performance Bikes which I get a huge laugh out of as well as its a bit dodgey..

I usually buy a KiwiRider when I go to Australia. Cos it gives me something to read on the plane. And as I go about once a month, it sort of works.

But today there were NO KR at any of the three book shops at the airport ! Wot gvz wiv dat ?

(Well, I tell a lie. On my second round of searching, I thought I'd found them in one shop - 3 or 4 of them right up on a top shelf. Until I pulled 'em down. All of them, January 2006. Wot gvz wiv DAT ?).

So i had to buy a NZ Bike Rider instead. QUite good but a bit too much of the old crusty stuff , and the section on Hogs and choppers doesn't do anything for me personally (No offense to them, but just not my thing). So I guess the Hog & Chopper section in BRM balances out the dirt section in KR. But KR has the bikes for sale thing in it, so that puts it ahead. If I could get it . Meh.

If you want value for money: Superbike digital works out at about $3 or $4 per issue...and you don't have to wait...I just got the May issue today. Probably a good 3 months before NZ will get the hard one in the news stands.

Guess I'm just a bike freak and like reading about bikes. I've every copy of BRM from no.1 and usually, (well okay, always), buy KR as well as most other mags if I see an article of particular interest. My wife says I spend way too much on mags but then she buys shoes and clothes and stuff for the Grandson and the fish tank and I don't really care. At our age I figure just do pretty much what you want if you can afford it and enjoy living. There's good and not so good in all the mags, I take them as they come. :drinkup
