    change to moped law coming

Bikers on L plates cant ride between 10pm and 5 am - moped riders on car licences can - at least until 1 June when they will be subject to same rules .

Also all restricted tests for cars and bike will be tightened up on 1st June

Just thought you might like to know in case it affects you
If you say either "I can" or "I can't" your correct.

Thanks for the heads up. Must go for my restricted before the change comes into force.

Where would I go in Christchurch to take an advanced riding course (so then I can take the test before June)? Much appreciated if you do.

Thank goodness I just sat mine yesterday. And I do believe I did my basic handling with you Lee, in a carpark in Otahuhu. Cheers for that!

Don't panic Captain Mainwaring. If (big if, admittedly) the LTSA is telling the truth, the changes are only to the 1R (car restricted) test. According to the LTSA website

    http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/rules/q-and-...nt-2006-1.html

    Changes affecting novice drivers
Prohibit moped drivers on a Class 1L (car learner) or Class 6L (motorcycle learner) licence from driving between the hours of 10 pm and 5 am.

New Zealand has a Graduated Driver Licensing System (GDLS) by which novice drivers are gradually introduced to driving in a three-step process, learner licence, restricted licence and full licence. The system prohibits a novice driver from driving during the at-risk times between 10pm and 5am.

If you hold a Class 6L and are learning to ride a motorcycle, you cannot ride from 10pm till 5am. The new rule will now also apply to those riding a moped using a Class 1L or Class 6L licence. The change aims to eliminate the anomaly and to improve safety for those holders of a learner licence when riding mopeds.
Improve the Class 1R (restricted licence) practical test.

An improved 1R test will be introduced from 1 July 2006. This test will further focus on the factors that provide the highest risk to novice drivers.
I don't vouch for it , though, since the LTSA website is notoriously unreliable .

the nz licence system is a joke. it's so easy it's ridiculous. try getting a licence in some european countries - costs you $5k, then if you get disqualified, you lose it for life.

    Some questions to ponder!

When is a moped a moped?
When is a mini chopper not a moped?
When is a motor over 50cc?

    Thinks of this.

Two minichopers riding at 60kmh on the norwestern motorway to tecoma st on the southern. both registered as mopeds. Neither had indicators, brake lights, number plate lights. One rider had no licence and the other disqualified. One had a push bike helmet the othe a skateboard helment with no liner, just a cap backwards. Both of the riders were woundering why they were pulled up.

This is a true story, should be on Ripleys belive it or not!
