It's illegal to pass unless there are passing lanes? Am I misreading this????

I had a witness who heard him say no points.......I tld him I was on 70 and he said 'well you do not have to worry".

My offence was not described as "Passing or attempting to pass where no passing lines are marked".......seems a bit ambiguous as mine was "crossing no overtaking line"....so I could pass but not by crossing lines.....

That link says that only some offences and all speeding get points so sounds like I got one of the others not listed for points.

    Any Officer's want to comment.

In any event still not worried as I would get an automatic day licence as I have a disabled Daughter.

keep an eye on the points situation. I was told that too for the same offence, but got points anyway.

tried to contest the points, saying that I was told it was 'only' a fine, and the cops should know the consequences of what they are handing out. No such luck. I was politely informed that crossing yellow lines == fine + points and if I took it to court I'd be stuffed anyway.

OMG are those yellow lines for no passing !?!?!?! .... one wouldnt think so .... I thought they were to make the roads look pretty ... after all ... in my 20 metre rig Ive been passed 18 times on them and 6 times on blind corners.
Seriously tho ....I NEVER pass on the yellow lines, one never knows which car watching is a mufty .. or what driver may hate bikers and *555 me... and also ... its not a good image for the biking fraternity to be seen blatantly breaking the law.

Graham, last time I got busted for failing to stop I was specifically told by the sargeant who arrested me while we were doing a deal on what I should get charged with (even I admit not all cops smoke pole) that there were no points attached to it. Which was good news for me since I'd only had my license back two weeks. But alas, it did have points attached, as I found out later when I checked my driving history to get car insurance. A day license? Still costs money no matter the reason for it. That could be an expensive passing maneouvre. But I agree with you for not running. Personally I might have kept going a little longer, but I wouldn't have run - not 2up in high winds.

Exactly...admitting it's not dangerous and then ticketing him anyway. I'm sure the cop wasn't an asshole...but clearly not intelligent enough to know how to do a good job...the right job.

you are misreading it. vague thing , Engklesh.
It means Passing .. where there are "NO-PASSING-LINES" marked on the road (ie , there were lines, you tried to pass).

At the end of the day what will be will be and I ain't gonna cry over it in 10 years time.....or come to think about it, 2 years time.

I guess it is a bit naughty of cop to not tell me when I asked but doesn't change things...do you think having a witness will make any difference?

I know a Lawyer at Church plus you can do it via CAB etc and get forms so should be sweet.

Ah, the case is altered quoth Plowden. I will apologise to the cop. (still a bit mean, he might have waved you on, but still) .

Always been in two minds about that m'self. Oh oh flashing lights! Is it me he wants ?. Stop , and he may decide to pick you up along the way, as he did you ; not stop and he gets mad.

I generally compromise by pulling to the left (and indicating) and slowing down, well under the limit but still going at a reasonable pace. Hopefully if he is after someone else, he thinks I am just moving over to let him past, and tootles off. If it is me he has decided to annoy, he pulls in behind me, flashing and hooting, and I stop.

    But that is the default.

The original purpose of the yellow lines was to warn motorists - "You might easily think this is a safe place to pass. But , beware, you are deceived, it is more dangerous than it appears."

It was never intended to classify every metre of road as "pass/don't pass here - "pass here. Don't pass there. OK here, not there. No not there , that bit's OK".

The yellow lines SHOULD be reserved for stretches where an ordinary motorist, exercising reasonable caution and judgement, might be expected to think that overtaking was safe; when in fact there is some not readily perceived hazard about the road that makes it more dangerous than it seems.

The rest of the roads should (and always were) left as white dashes, meaning "Be careful. Overtaking is always dangerous. But, there are no hidden traps or treachery here, to make it unexpectedly dangerous. You must exercise normal caution judgement and vigilance, and make your own decision"

How can some bureaucrat (who like as not hasnever seen the road!) decide that people should overtake *here*.
