Insurance, here's a beauty for ya all

Well I just did the big boy thing and insured my bike, went with Lumley as they insure both my cars too and I get a discount through westpac.

Well it appears I'm not covered for theft unless the bike is actually chained to something at home or on the street. After some tooing and froing (Thanks to the hardworking Lady, Theresa from Westpac) a disk lock or an alarm arent going to cut it for Lumleys.

Anyone else know about this? I mean to say, not horribly practical chaining you bike to something on the street is it? At home its Prolocked to the side of the house, parked behind Insanity mutt (big, black and bad tempered) but what could I possibly chain it to on the street? Should I get a sidecar for insanity mutt and chain her to it when I leave it on Taranaki St?

    Your thoughts?

Talk with your insurer and enquire as to what their minimum standard for security is.

Just another easy way for them to get out of paying up if it did get nicked. Lumley (who Star Insurance are underwriters for) are the company that I am having trouble with at the moment (not sure if you have read my thread).

Thanks for that Hitcher, what I was trying to point out was that I already have and that was the very letter of their rules on minimum security levels. It has to be chained to something Imobile and using a prolock or similar brand lock. Sucks right?

I presume that this only applies when the bike is at your home address, rather than on a park in town?

Town too as I'm told from the horses mouth! At home its already chained to house by a masonry D link.

I went with a specialist motorbike insurance broker: David Golightly.

I am with vero, and to be honest I have never looked to see if I have the same issue.

It is absolutely the industry standard to remove any effective cover for motorcycle theft away from your own property.

I canned my AMI policy for that reason - they only covered for theft if it was chained to a bolt anchor set in concrete, at the address where I lived, in a locked garage. Everywhere else it was fair game.

Mate, regardless of what Fish Slayer says, Star insurance are actually brilliant in general. His case is an exception adn they dont require silly security requirements. Also try swan, i heard they were ok.

Rather makes theft cover pointless, doesn't it?

I expressed my opinions on indurance companies in the other thread. Blood sucking leeches was one phrase I omitted.

They're high on the list for nationalisation. And I've set aside a special length of brick wall for the directors.

That's why i didnt go with AMI (from memory), they told me it had to be chained to the garage floor with some heavy duty chainage and big ass bolt or something... i told em they're dreaming and sent them packing...
... 10 years of loyal service and they wanted me to bolt it down? i dont think so tim! haha

I just phoned David Golightly to clarify the Vero policy, his advice was that my bike is covered for theft away from my address provided I take reasonable security precautions, i.e. use the steering lock, disc lock or whatever. I am very happy with that.

    I'd recommend him: ph 03 3792428

Sorry Henry, I should have mentioned that I moved to Classic Cover at Oscar's advice, and they are underwritten by Vero - problem solved, and I saved money on premiums.

I just have to stop crashing altogether now.
