Must be all Wgtn tips, the southern one is the same. I wonder what the council does with it and if they're making a profit from what ever it is they do with it?...
Is there a charge at Porirua?

Cheers. I'll drop it off at the tip next time I go for a drive.

Waste Oil Combustion - most goes down to Westport for cement production, the rest is supplied to oil burning furnaces around the country. No,they don't make money, but the oil is picked up free of charge by various companies like Salters.Be very careful with what you take in - if it's contaminated by solvents or water there will be a contamination clean up fee applied to whoever supplied the contaminated waste - that means the Council,so then in future they will pass on the cost...to you.

Bring it around and paint my fence with it if you like. I'll supply the beer.

Tie it to the back of your bike and next time the rozzas are chasing you, let it *accidentally* fall off...
Now, where's the rest of the 007 gizmos to invent.....

edit: Or... find out where the boi ricers go to do burnouts, and pour it all over the road on a tight turn just before they get there!
They can reclaim their p.o.s. cages on the outside of the corners (hopefully down a steep incline.

Does the Porirua Tip charge for dropping off the oil or is it out in the entrance section?

Porirua Tip: Last time I went (last year) the waste oil drop off point had been moved into the Tip itself - so you do have to pay to dispose of it now. So..... currently I also have quite a collection of old oil (and batteries) waiting for me to accumulate enough other rubbish to make a tip visit worthwhile.

Rather than start whole a new thread, anyone know of a good place in central-ish Auckland? I've got a few litres to get rid of.

Auckland = look on the Akl city website for the Hazmobile dates. They take old batteries, paint, oil, dodgy weedkiller your grandad had in the back shed...

    Just do what i do...

After finishing your oil/filter change. Take the bucket/container that the used oil is in, place it in the middle of your backyard, and wait for the rain to make it overflow...

Oh and if you leave it long enough someone is bound to attempt to mow over it...

Personally, I'm in favour of the drain m'self. Green, schmean.

But for those of tender conscience, disposal is easy quick and free.

Pour the old oil back into the (now empty) container that the new oil came in. Tak care not to smear any oil on the label, and wipe the container down throughly. Put the container back in the bag that you bought it home in. Take it with you and pop round to your local repco or supercheap. Park (preferably out of sight of the door) , walk to the door, carrying the bag. Turn round at the door , walk back . Put the bag down on the footpath in front of your car/bike . Get into the car/ on the bike and drive/ride home . Some clever person will think they have scored free oil. Honesty is its own reward. So is dishonesty.

Heh,heh,I didn't quite do that, but - I've always been a tight prick and I used to run my old A40 pick up on used oil I drained from cars at work, picked the good ones of course.I kept the tin on the tray of my truck, along with some old tyres and stuff. One morning I came out to find it all gone...I laughed and wondered what the mood was in the morning when by light of day the thief found out what his spoils were....didn't lose nothing else off the tray after that.

I am not a greenie but...

Yeah I used to put it down the drain, but I actually followed our storm water drain down the gully not so long ago and was suprised to see a stream with small fish in there up to two or so inches long (and no, it was NOT my naked reflection in the water). Ever since then I am carefull what I put down there.

If you had to, I would say the time-honoured method of "pouring it into the long grass down the back" would be better than in a storm water drain - but then I am no environmental scientist - I just like fish.
