    US Bikers build own town.

Yes, town. As in, a place where people live.

    Yep. You got it.

    From the article

Motorcyclists, once thought of as outlaws and renegades, have moved into the American mainstream, Smith said.

"The old stigma of the biker is gone," said Smith, known to his friends as Wayne. "It's corporate America. It's lawyers, bankers, all kinds of people. They put their leathers on and when they're here drinking a beer together, they're all brothers."
Oh, the BAD ASSES ! (Sorry Mr Hitcher, but needs must)

Ichabod, Ichabod. No wonder bikers get no respect these days, people think we're all posing plonkers.

We,re all bikers on our day of[think about it]i,ve got the impression reading some of the posts here that there,s a few kb,rs that work in a office,i doubt that they would sit at work all leathered up saying check me out i ride motorcycles i,m a hard ass,but come the weekend their doing no different from what the other corporates are doing.Sure there,s posers but then there,s a shit load that are,nt also.I think the town,s a good idea i,d like to see something like that here but with the amount of regulations and other bullshit thats fucked this country it would be highly unlikely.

Well of course, it is still quite possible to work in an office and still ride to work. Many bikers are bikers 7 days a week. Or, at any rate miss only the odd day.

    Motorcycle Mecca!

When the old NZED hostel in Omarama became available for sale at reasonable $$$$ I had a thought of buying it and establishing a sort of Mecca for motorcycles.
Kind of like a permanent rally or cafe stopover for bikers!
Still like the idea and the increase in value would have made it worth while just to have a go, don't think I would have lost money even if it didn't work.
20/20 hindsight again, just lacked the balls to do it. Cheers John.
PS: It is a Motel complex now.

My God. I used to do audits of that place a few years back when I was with Electricorp... err, ECNZ... err Meridian... err they must be due for another change. 1988 to about 1992. I suppose it's the same place. Just off the left of the main road as you come in from the Kurow end?

No, though perhaps less exposed to the mercies of commuting cages. But you are quite correct that some bikers are proscribed.

Though I wonder how many bosses would have to nerve to lay down a strict "no motorcycles for commuting" rule. I would dearly have loved to have one of them try that on some-one when I was a union delegate. Wherez me flat cap. All out bruvvers, until management apologise for their their truculent antiworker aggression.

I think I might start a poll on this.
