    Restricted licence test

I'll be doing my restricted test this Friday... I think I'll be alright, but it seems that people's experiences differ. One thing I noticed is that people have been asked to do a U-turn in a narrow street without putting feet down? How many people have had to do this, and is this something I should be worried about?

Presumably you can do it ? Is a pretty easy thing to do.

EDIT: U-turn and hill start seem pretty classic, even had to do those in my day - and 'twas a u-turn on a steep uphill too.

I think you prolly get one or other, but they shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

I get the impression that unless you strike out and draw Tester Twat you can hardly fail.

Maybe I just need to practice my U-turns a bit before the test. Just a bit worried about making a cock of myself and falling over.

    Red face

I know this might sound silly but if you book your restricted/full test online dont forget your proof of address when you go in to sit it. You might then avoid a full noise run up and down Dominion Rd and to get back in time

I would just like to personally thank the NZ police force for not being on Dominion Rd last Sunday morning Had they been it would have defeated the purpose of getting my proof of address to sit my licence as I would no longer have one

You realise what kind of sucky turning circle a kawasaki ZXR has?

May pay to use the GN when I do mine...

haha, when it comes time, i should try do my restricted on my work bike.. u-turns are a synch.. really small turning circle.. and really nice balance (due to the fact the thing probably weighs less than the mail that it holds)

    test U turn

I had to practice the nuts off U turns for the Pommie test in London as apparently foot down is an instant fail for the whole test.

Just feather the clutch plenty to keep it smooth & not too jerky, get it on very near to full lock, get as much turn in early to make the exit easier and if you feel the dreaded urge to put the inner foot down if the bikes weight starts to drop in then give it more throttle instead and it will come upright.

You want to practice it to the point where even if you f**k up a little you'll still scrape round..

Ride the back brake, constant throttle, control the speed with the clutch and look where you're going.

Spend an hour practicing and you'll be sweet as.

    Hi there

Just a question relating to the restricted license test. I have read on other posts on this site that when stop at a stop sign you are supposed to have both feet on the ground, but when i did my basic handling skills cert i was told to have my left foot on the ground and my right one up. What is it that the testing people are looking for?

The advice given in the BHT is the better practice. And the one used by most experienced bikers .

However, there is a known historical tendency for testers in NZ to be extremely anal about people not stopping ABSOLUTELY TOTALLY COMPLETELY at stop signs. So to "prove the point" and make it totally clear that you have indeed completely stopped, the suggestion to put both feet down.

Thing is , if you put just the left foot down, it is normally the foot away from the view of the tester (the bike is between him in his car and your foot) . He will see you with your foot up and think you are doing a "rolling stop" And fail you. This is not an issue with a good tester. But not all of them are good.

So, regard the "both feet down" as a special "test only" rule.
