Prick in a BMW rammed me bike and did a runner, I have his plate- help

I parked up my bike in fielding today and why I was away a prick in a BMW SUV backed into it, got out looked at it, then drove off. No real damage done, just a smashed indicator. A kind citizen saw it and took down the plate and left it with the bank I was parked outside of. The bank left a note on my bike to pick up the number from them which I did (bloody good types in fielding eh!) Anyways, I don't have the original witnesses name and I only have 3rd party insurance. I'm not so pissed at the damage, but more at the principle of it.
I went to the cops and they gave me a form to fill in. I kinda don't want to hassle them to investigate a pissy little matter like this (and the prob will not anyway, and fair enuff as they should be chasing real crims)
Soooo, does anyone know how I can get this guys details from his plate? I want to deal with the matter myself in a legal way, even though I'd like to put my motocross boots on and rain suit over leathers to bulk me up and see his face when a 6 ft 8 (with boots) bike rider shows up at his door.
I just want to ring or send letter with the the quote from the local Kawasaki store and get him to send a check to them.
I'm pissed, and want to sort it out, so any help on how to do this would be appreciated.
I'm guessing a BMW SUV is like at least a 150 K car, so he should be able to afford the $70 for a new indicator eh.

Post office can give you details for a few bucks , just fill in a form. But there's some on the site have direct access to that info.

M'self, I prefer the 6'8" biker knocking on the door deal, but each to their own. Don't be surprised if he just ignores your letter though.

Sorry BMW, that option does not give me name or addy

Ixion, I would go to his door if he ignores me, though I'm definitly in the gentle giant catagory and would need to fake being staunch...anyone with access to info, feel free to PM me, I know how to be VERY discreet.
    Cheers

On Fair Go tonight they were talking about how with a car name and registration you can find out the legal owner. Apparently you can also change the ownership then do all sorts of other things (sell the vehicle, take out a loan etc)!

I got rammed riding last week. Didn't get the plate of the guy.

good luck, will the witness stand up to defend you? Disputes thingy will let you take it up with them but will cost ya $50. Question is: is it worth it?

I'd probably replace with some $20 LED indicators, go get owners details from the post office and then crap in their mail box.

I would get a quote on the parts - then get his name and address via PO and send him a polite letter noting the witnesses and requesting rectification with a copy of the quote.

Then consider your options if he declines.
