    Question Going for your full

Hey, just have a question here.

Have done my restricted for a bike some time ago, and a month before that i did a difensive driving course to shorten my wait for a full car licence.

But the thing is - i used that certificate for the car, so if i go to vtnz to do my full for a bike now, can i use that certificate again? I mean it says that you can only sign up for dif driving if you've held your restricted for at least 6 months, and i did it a month before i actualy passed my restricted for a bike. (Hope you follow)

So now, because i have a full car licence and only one more riding test to do, would you all think they are gonna be lenient on me and let me use the certificate again? Otherwise im gona have to wait another 4 months,.,.??

Cheers in advance for some more info on that. Or maybe there is someone who had similar situation ?

It makes sense that the DD course would give you the time off your license, because its the principals they teach that matters, not when you do it.

Having said that, we are dealing with beurocracy here, so who knows? Maybe you could give them a ring to check, and then let us know.

BTW, how much did your DD course cost?

From what I have been told, no, I'm afraid you cannot.

By using the certificate for the car, you have, as such, loaded onto the class 1 license. From what I understand, its a one time use form. ie, if you hadn't used it for the car, you *may* have been able to use it for the bike (issues of when you did it, compared to what riding license you had etc come into effect)

Technically, there isn't no expiry on the form as laid out in law, but ltnz do try it on, when technically, they shouldn't be able to...

Just finished doing the DD course, the passrite one was $145 drum...

From memory, 6 months to 3 for over 25s. 18 months to 12 months for under 25s BUT you must not take the course until you have had your restricted 6 months, if under 25.

Whether it's worth it is an individual matter. Depends how much you want the full. If you're not hankering after a >250cc machine the full makes no real difference over a restricted (maybe pillion passenger for some). But if you're already riding illegally on a >250, the DD could be a good investment - costs less than $400 for breach of licence conditions.

Ixions right on the money... pretty usual for him though

For me, I already have a cc exemption, so thats not an issue. Its the riding at night, and taking pillions. Not having to carry a letter around would be nice as well

hi, why did u get a cc exemption for? if i may ask?

i was thinking bout gettin an exemption as well - but for me it was for riding at nite, i have a weekend pub job so the finishing is between 1ish and 6ish, depends on how busy we are, so i wanted to be able to ride back home at nite. but now i gota ring vtnz next week and find out if they can accept my DD certificate. so hopefully i wont have to wait too much longer.

Yea, thats the way it is. It cost $100 in Dunnas when i did it in March.

But my case is a bit 'twisted'. I did DD when i had restricted on the car for more than 6 months, so i cud use it when doin full for the car few weeks ago. I didnt have restricted for the bike when i was doin the course tho. (And i just turned 25 so the waiting time has been shortened a bit, which is gud.) BUT if i wanted to do full on the bike soon id need to have DD completed for it. So wots the point goin for DD again, if i did it 3 months ago?? Cant they just see ive just done it recently, so the knowledge is still fresh, etc,.,.?

Definitely ringin them to (hopefuly) talk my way into being able to do my full soon.

Any more ideas and info guys....?

    size, I'm 6 foot 3, 100kg.

I had my suspension on my 250 stiffened as far as it could go, and was still bottoming it out through corners. Almost crashed it a few times trying to avoid things I thought the bike wouldn't cope with, and luckily LTNZ saw it the same way, so now I can ride any cc bike.

Is it a course specifically for riders, or a generic risk identification course?

What about usefulness? Im not too interested in just shortening license times, but does it make you a safer rider? Ive been driving a cage for 20 years and know how to spot a dickhead.

I did a DD course for my car licence, and it was absolutely useless. I'm sure some are good, but the lady taking the one I went to actually told the class that a good way of emergency braking was changing down through the gears... For emergency braking? Hmmm...

Seems like the worst kind of revenue gathering to me. Dissapointing and typical.

DD course only works with your car licence unfortunatly. I have to wait the whole 18 months which sux but theres not alot you can do about it but learn to ride your bike closer to its extremes and wait the extra time.
You know you had a good nite when you have to ask someone if you had a good nite.
