Thread: New noise regime.

  1. #91
I'm getting sick of this, and I'll say it no more.

Situation normal for what is already in service - but if your WoF inspector has been a bit worried about how noisy your bike is,but didn't want to make an issue about it then he might refer you to the noise test crowd. If a cop stops you and thinks you are making too much noise he'll send you off to the testorator.

The new regs are being applied to vehicles complied as of this date....not 1985....not the exhaust you fitted in 1998...not the second hand bike you bought last week - JUST newly complied vehicles.

    More changes will be coming.

You are Grandfathered - got it?!

Shit, you're in trouble then, Better get in fast and book it in for testing, there'll be long queues, you don't want to be without your bike for weeks while waiting, d'y'. Bummer though, getting caught by just one year, eh.

hmm, my bike has been tested stationary at 95db at 5000rpm, that was with standard pipe so i'd hate to think what it is now.

Now as for dovers bike... thats a whole other story!

Oh and N4SKins overpiped ZX2R, wtf will that come in at!

It will be fine.... until they try to match up the photos they are supposed to take...

Out of curiosity, I would be interested in how loud mine is, but free of charge, and no penalties if it fails . The zx7r was supposed to be a loud bike anyway, and it has an not-new muzzy (ie, probably no packing any more).

I just hope the cops leave me alone, I don't even reach the 4500 rpm under normal city riding. Then factor in the point that unless its in first, I break the 50kph limit in any other gear (1st is 40kph-ish)... and the new thous have it even better. That makes the testing rpm pretty stupid.

seriously? do you 'have' to take your bike in for compulsory testing? or is it just if you get pulled up?

Like finding a WOF place that boy racers work at. One near my work here will pass anything even my bike with no mufflers at all.

Some things are being missed here. This is NOT part of a WOF test. There are only 12 testing sites. If you nail your noise maker past a cop you're asking to be stickered.
The alternative was going to be a flat 92 db and NO modified exhausts. Thank the trade people and LVVT guys that this is a reasonably tolerant noise level.

Have asked a couple of times over what the cops procedures will be but alas your is the first answer over the stickering.

    Thanks Lou!

Ps already thought of a simple attachment to ones exhaust that would lower the measured db dramatically will have to make some test rigs up!

    finally got it

Firstly thanks to Bykey Cop for the downloads and Motu for the correct info. I was going to put off buying some screamin eagle slashcuts for the softail because of this but it now seems they will be fine.

Seems to me that, as its not part of WOF test, if your bike is that loud andyou go full noise past a cop and get your bike sent to be certified, then you deserve it. There are some HOG members who will struggle with this test but hell their bikes are too damn loud!!!!!! Straight 7"pipes that fire flames on a throttle off..while they look good, they are guaranteed to attract unwanted attention...I guess we all jumped to the immediate conclusion that it related to a WOF test and that most bikes (Jap, Italian, Yank..cruiser, sportsbikes) would be screwed but it appears that this is not the case...........yet!!!!!!

Maybe just maybe we need as a collective group of motorcyclists to get off our high horses and realise that not everyone loves the sound of a bike at full noise screaming around..be that a Yank cruiser, a Jap sportsbike whatever, just the same as some people don't appreciate a bike wheeling past them on the open highway. Yes we have the right to ride on our roads but there are certain obligations we have to meet to do this...these are called laws. Surprisingly our road laws in NZ are not as draconian as some other countries. Rather than bleating on about Helen and her sexual preferences and Muldoon and his different approach to democracy, be prepared to do something about it!!!!!! I do hope that everyone here actually votes every three years for a start.

We do need to be aware though that the more excessively noisy bikes there are, the more the call will be to include it in the WOF test. Be ready to write submissions to any proposed law change, support petitons etc...the system does work sometimes..anyway my 2 cents worth.....

I'd be surprised if any bikes get tested. Most of us are pretty good and you don't often hear about a noisy bike problem. However if this roots those fuckwit boy racer types them hey I'm all for it. Bunch of tossers.

Nice to know they tested one like mine...good just in case I have an unfortunate meeting with Mr Plod. Tho my bike is not really that noisy anyway, just a has a nice rumble to it

    I'm for this implementation.

I live on a busy street, and the boi ricers love charging down it. Yep, my choice to live here, but I will still be happy if the top 10% loudest ones are made quieter.

Did anyone else spot section 2.9(4)? Motor vehicles primarily for motor-sport activities get an extra 2db? As long as you have club membership, race licence and logbook. That's good, they are not the ones racing past my house at 3am.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha - but seriously you'll be Ok if you live in Auckland but where are the other 11 centres going to be? In fact they'll probably put two or three of them up there and only a couple in the South Island. WHat happens if you get the test doen and you pass - do they refund you the travel costs and loss of earnings? can't be real can it?
