Road to Bethells... a while ago now...

A fair while ago now I was on one of my blats out towards Bethells (going what I consider the 'back way') in my cage... anyway, was going fair fast then up ahead I saw a bike + rider on the left had side of the road at the start of a corner (just up from the oneway bridge after which you turn right onto the road that heads straight to the beach, corner has a good cliff on one side), signalling me to slow down... so I did so, and carried along slowly... up ahead on the right side of the road was another bike+rider sorta just waiting there. Carried on past him, around the corner still crawling along and theres a large group, a few signalling me to keep slow etc... at the front was 2 bikes going slowly, one of which appeared to be helping/guiding the other.

I thought at the time that someone must have came off or something... but there didn't appear to be signs of it, and the whole thing struck me as really quite odd.

It just occured to me that it may have been a KB organised run out that way... (was really quite a while ago, well before my KB time..)

Basically i'm just wondering if it was a KB run, and if so, what happened? I've done my best to detail it so if it rings a bell to anyone..

oh, yeah, that'd be Blind Tony. Was a real keen biker for years, then tragically lost his sight. But he loves riding so much that every so often it gets too much for (refuses to sell his bike!) so every so often a bunch of the guys get together and take him out to a quiet spot, he gets on the bike and basically has a bit of a slow ride with someone alongside to guide him - "corner coming up, lean now, bit more , apex, straighten up" etc. Works well, makes him REAL happy, and does no one any harm.

I did here a story a few months ago.... bloke was talking about a blindish guy that wouldnt give it away, he was seen standing on his bike which was lent against a road sign, and he had his face real close to the sign so he could read it, it was down Kopu way....

Blind Tony usually settles for pillion on a mates Harley. Last saw him outside the cafe in Ngatea on the way to the Paeroa races. He never misses them. You caqn spot him easy, cos of the white stick! Him and his mate both have those vests covered in badges.

I have heard such a story - but thought it was just one of those urban legend,y'know like the one about the guy who built an old pre war in his shed and broke a speed record...just rumours.

The road to Bethells? It was oh so much better when it was gravel, and when you could ride your bike on the dunes.Used to know, and still know people who live there, you get to their places by going up the stream behind the dune.
