    Giveway Rule @ Roundabouts

I had a rather heated discussion the other day about how to get around the panmure roundabout....

Ive included two sketches, excuse the bad drawing

the first one shows the roundabout, three lanes coming in from EP Highway and two going down lagoon drive

There are two ways that you can look at what lane goes where....

In the first the car in the middle lane takes the left hand lane exit and the car in the right hand lane takes the right hand lane exit at lagoon drive.

In the second the car in the far left hand lane could go all the way around the roundabout (or have got on at say jellicoe rd) and take the left hand lane exit at lagoon and the car in the middle takes the right hand exit lane. The car closet to the middle then has to keep going around...... unless there is no one in the middle lane so they can nip into that lane

I have seen both but am yet to see an accident, which interpretation is right??

When I go through i generally take the 1st option in the far right hand lane, massive over the shoulder head checks to ensure no one is coming down the other lane and then as you say blast off to the exit before carnage arrives

my suggestion is to move to the North Shore, where there isn't any bloody silly intersections like that.......

There is no other way. If you live in Panmure you have to go through the roundabout.

And there is no "right" way to deal with that roundabout. It is too complex for the rules

I wrote to the dude in Christchurch who was responsible for drawing up the new roundabout indicator rules, and sent him a photo of the Panmure roundabout. He shat his pants and said "We don't have ANYTHING like that down here. People will just have to do the best they can. Wibble. Wibble". (I sent him the Royal Oak one , too)

I've navigated that roundabout an average of 3 or 4 times a day for years. I've never seen an accident on it, though I've had some close misses. In a few cases I've ridden right round it to have another go.

Worst problem is people coming from Ellerslie Highway, in lane 2 wanting to go left up Jellicoe Rd, and cutting across in front of people in lane 1 wanting to go straight ahead down Queens Rd.

Both your scenarios are "correct" . Or "wrong"

thats the most craziest round about man, i've been there and i usually take the far left lane coz i get off Jellicoe rd that way, but yea if you miss your gaze you're a gonna! some stupid cagers even cross lanes within the roundabout, now thats dangerous.

Panmure roundabout is the classic example of a road so obviously dangerous that it's safe. Cos it looks so frightening people actually wake up and pay attention.

Make ALL roads apparently difficult and dangerous, I say.

    Try this one then.
The car in the lefthand lane shouldnt go past more than 1 exit.
    Problem solved

Kinda works here buts theres a tiny little road before jellicoe rd called mountain road and really the left hand lane goes to both of them....so in this case the left hand lane can only go to the first two exits

No, that's a minor rd [mountain rd] that heads up to only a few places. Hardly anyone coming from Ellerslie uses that road, they get to that industrial area further east (usually from Forge)

At least the roundabout is large, you have plenty of room to maneuvre and/or plant it to get on to the intersection. The Royal Oak one is so damn small, everything seems to happen a lot faster.

BTW, the way I approach it is:
LEFT LANE = Jellicoe Rd or Mountain Rd
MIDDLE LANE = 'Straight ahead' through to Queens Rd
RIGHT LANE = For Lagoon Drive or Ireland Rd

Personally I use your method #1 but each time I go round that bloody roundabout in the cage with the missus she gives me a big lecture about how im doing it wrong. If ya check ya blindspots a quadzillion times and just keep going around the roundabout in your lane if theres an issue then you'll be sweet
