    Truck Magnets

Are bikes attracted to trucks like a magnet, I wonder.

I have just got home from work and read that about the bike/truck accident at 8 Mile Junction. RIP to the biker.

I commuted on the bike today because I knew that the traffic on the Auckland motorway would be more shit than normal. I had a very close encounter with a truck when we were heading north on the Southern and getting off at Mt Wellington. I don't know what happened in front of him/her but I could easily guess that someone pulled in front of him, into his braking space and then when they quickly stopped, he had to stop even quicker.

It must've looked really good from further back. Unfortunately I was too tied up in the action to appreciate the full effects. I had a cement truck on my right. Cement truck did a lot of braking too and that left space for original truck to ease his cab into. I went for the left shoulder cos I could see daylight that way. The truck was sideways and wheels locked up. Yes, heaps of smoke. The funny thought that went thru my head was "F***K the tyres aren't screaming.

Excellent driving by the truckie. He then released brakes and just popped into the middle lane in front of the cement truck. I gave him room to come back in but he decided that he didn't trust the cage driver and went on further down the line before moving in.

And that is not my first encounter with a truck by any means. Had all sorts of incidents, a few that have left me feeling most appreciative that I was still alive.

Dunno why, but every incompetant muppet in town seemed to be out for his/her annual drive today. And traffic wasn't particularly heavy either.

Yeah on the 20th there seemed to be all smacktards out in force behind the wheel. Before I fucked my engine I seemed to encounter all manner of absolute tits on the road. One was some ancient old geezer in a station wagon who thought it would be smart to sit in right-turn or left-turn only lanes at the lights then fly off as fast as he could in front of everybody else to get in front of the people going straight ahead, so he could be at the head of the queue. He also would scream down the left lane of Manukau Rd where everybody parks their cars and when he had no room left in that lane would pull back without warning in the right lane.

I kept well back out of his way. Drove like an arse. The funny thing was though was how quick I seemed to catch back up to him even though i was doing max 55-60kph and obeying all road rules (no lane splitting either).

Good to hear you're in one piece, Will. That's the good thing about bikes I suppose -- you can poke them into narrow little gaps if you get into trouble. Hope you have rather less exciting (for the wrong reasons) rides in the future ^_^.
