Some licence questions - here and away

Hi there, had a bit of a search around but didn't find anything too insightful.

I've got a couple of questions. First of all, I don't have a car licence or anything (I'm 18 lol, and didn't have any sort of licence until a month or so ago haha). I got my learner motorcycle licence, and could've got my car learners at the same time but didn't do it because of the cost. Now, further down the track, with, say, a full licence (or restricted if that's possible as well), can I pick up a car licence simply by doing the test and walking away with a full licence? Or do I have to wait the full 2 years (or 18 months with the educational course) again! Because that would be a bit shit .

Secondly, at Christmas I'm going back to Brisbane (I am a kiwi, don't worry about that lol) to see my father. He's a born again biker with a cruiser (poor bastard) and a few of his mates ride bikes; at any rate there possibly will be a 250cc Jap cruiser available for my use, legal for learners as that is what the lady was using it for until she got her big bike. My question is -- can I use my learners NZ licence in Australia, does anybody know? I know you can take your full licence with you and use it, but what about Learners/Restricted? I wonder if it'd be possible to bluff the cops with my learners licence anyway if I did get picked up...

Yeah mate, you'll have to sit your car seperatly and wait the full 2 years and go through the learners and restricted shit. Super dooper gay.

I have been investigating a similar situation and i think you can use your learners/restricted to ride a 250 for the first 12 months that you are there. After that you may have to get it transferred or sit a test in Aus (if you are staying that long)

I think basically for the first year you can use your nz licence as long as you ride within the conditions of it.

First question: What ever license you want to hold you have to go throu the whole Learner to Restricted to full. Whethere that be a car, bike or a truck license.
Those the rules sorry there aint nought you can do about it.

Second question: If you are holding a Learners license in NZ I cant see there being any problem at all using it in Aussie.... your insurance or road taxes may be a tad higher if you crash it.
Contact MsTruimp or SpMan as they are both over in Aussie and they could find ut for you.



and Oi there aint nought wrong with cruisers...
after you ride the one in aussie you will change your mind about them...
just remember that they handle differently when going around corners from sportbikes... the bike takes you... not the other way round. You dont need to learn over so far...

My understanding (though I am open to correction) is that the international convention, which allows a visitor to a country to drive for a period on their home country licence, does NOT apply to a learner "licence". This is because a learner has not demonstrated their competance, it is really a licence to LEARN not to DRIVE.

Our legislation is LAND TRANSPORT (DRIVER LICENSING) RULE 1999
PART 14 - RECOGNITION OF OVERSEAS LICENCES AND LICENSING OF DRIVERS FROM OVERSEAS

Sect 88 Recognition of overseas driver licence or permit

A valid [and current] driver licence or permit issued [overseas] to the person, after the person has produced proof of the person's driving competence, by an overseas authority, or an agent of that authority, authorised to issue a driver licence or permit; or[

I do not know Australian legislation, but as the rule is an international convention, I imagine it is much the same. I know you cannot get an International Driving Permit with a Learner licence.

Whether the Australian police would be "fooled" by a NZ Learner's licence, I do not know. Bear in mind that insurance cover could be affected. You would need to arrange insurance cover there, since they have no ACC scheme. Driving without insurance could be very unwise.

When you come to applyu for a car licence , unless you wait until you are 25, you will have to go through the two year process again.

As for the car licence, well that's a bit of an arse. Oh well, I should save up and do learners car licence ASAP; I'm sure a car licence will come in useful one day, no matter how much I like bikes.

@Ixion, I had heard the learners/restricted was non-transferable overseas. I knew that definitely you can't use restricted in UK. However I've noticed on other occasions Australia and NZ seem to share certain agreements that they don't have with other countries so I thought I'd ask just in case anybody knew. At any rate I'm sure I could feign ignorance as a `dumb Kiwi' (go to the Gold Coast, there's fscking millions of them LMAO) and get away with it in the remote case I was pulled over during a few weeks holiday.

Hahah crashe don't worry I'm not anti-cruisers (though I do take exception to some parts of the `image'), I just can't quite picture myself on one yet lol. Will be interesting to see if I take to riding on a flying lounge seat.

Oh I can't remember the thread but it popped up quite recently. It was about some KBer here in NZ who had restricted licence and wouldn't have his full by the time he went to the UK, and was wondering if he could use it over there. It wasn't you, was it? Lol.
