Vinyl number plates

'Bullshit' plates are not legal. In some circumstances the cops turn a blind eye, but I wouldn't rely on their goodwill....
These vinyl plates are often to be found on the front of MX5's, Cobra's and the like. I have made them for such cars before, using reflective white background and black nos/outline so that they closely resemble the real thing. The owners know that they risk a fine, but prefer that to a real plate buggering up the lines of the front or blocking the radiator air intake.

i think also that the plod don't mind as much if you have a real plate attached at the rear that matches the front. Less dodgy.

Got one on my bike, never had any problems with the or WOF's.

Its not a WOF issue.

The cops that have pulled you over either haven't noticed the plate or simply don't know that they are illegal.

Its a $200 fine.

Not really, what about the other plate that belongs on the front of the car? Where is it if it isn't on the front of the car it belongs to?

Why not have two identical cars, (his & hers), put the original plates from one on the back of each car and a fake on the fronts, then only register one and use both for the price of one?

Eight dollars in fact. Take old one into Vehicle licensing agency, fill out a form, pay $8. You will get a new (with a different number) plate, and new rego papers will arrive in a week or so. Don't forget to tell Insurance company about new number.

i'm pretty sure you can get the same number, but it costs more!

so you pull Winja in his MX5 with a vinyl front plate that is clearly visible reflective can be seen by a speed camera, has a proper one on the rear and its pair inside the vehicle would you fine him the $200 tax?

I see in one of the latest AMCN's that the Aussie governtaxgatheringmint has finally given up on the idea of front number plates on bikes over there so they can catch the small minority of bikers that speed past speed camersa (naughty boys and girls). It was an issue worrying the hell out of bikers over there for ages but looks like its been resolved at last. Imagine trying to put a plate on most modern bikes ????
I imagine they will move to transponders instead then there will be little room to escape
And some wanker here will surely follow if given the chance.

My mum recieved this fine on her MX5 the other day $200.00, she drives a MX5 and had made an identical looking number plate from Vinyl and reflective material etc.... as well as displaying the original in the front window, the main reason was because of overheating problems as the factory location is right infront of the inlet manifold. Luckily they offered her 14 days compliance but unfortunately there is not much way around it as it needs to be a number plate as produced by LTNZ or a recognised maufacturer (personalised plates etc...) however i talked to the local police prosecutor and he said in special circumstances vinyl ones may be allowable, he just lost a case where some one had a masarati (sp?) got away with it because there was nowhere to put it. however on a bike.........i dont think there would be anyway round it.

A friend has a chopped down (personalised) plate (standard plate with border removed, cut right back to the letters) on his ZXR. Never been questioned by the police, never been failed on a WOF.

its not a wof issue as you can get a wof without a registration cant you!

I recall in my doughtnut eating days of pulling over a chap on Orewa's sunny beachfront using brown cardboard plates marked in brown marker pen.... classic.... said he just couldn't afford the replacement plates. Lucky for him he had no record and hadn't been involved in petrol drive-offs.
