    Pulled over...

Was riding home from work today when I saw a Police stationwagon pulling up from behind. We were on a street that intersects with the police station. Now my L plate tends to cover up my rego abit so i thought i would turn the other way thinking that he'd be heading home. Wrong. Followed me round the corner. I take the next rigght up ahead andd he follows me round that then bleeps his siren. Speeding, Cutting a corner (marginally) and expired rego. Guess what that got me. The infamous, "wheter you are in the right or wrong, the car always wins" speech.
    Sweet, thanks Mr nice cop

i got pulled up last night going around a traffic island to pass a car... (it's illegal)... no mirrors, expired rego, one indicator misssing, and probably some 11kmh+ over in there too.

All he did was say "did you know that passing around a traffic island is illegal, you can only pass on broken white lines", took down my details and then laughed at me when i told him why i had a court appearance pending from my previous traffic offence then it was "have a nice night" (what was left of it)

not a good feeling when you have 20 points left and anything more than 10kmh over the speed limit means you get to catch the bus for another 3 months.

That is bloody bloody lucky, in all honesty he should have given you a ticket, and he would've been WELL within his right, obviously.

I personally think that when the day comes where vehicles cannot be started unless their WOF and Rego are current (through some smart technology), and their driver is sober (IS being done in the US right now) and appropriately licenced (again, smart tech.), and they have at least 3rd Party Insurance, it will be a good day for mankind as a whole.

I don't see any reason why some people should operate vehicles without paying for all the things the rest of us do. (being skint is no excuse, take the bus even though it is harder/slower)

What do you mean "round a traffic island" ? Do you mean a painted centre median? (That is illgeal)

But on what basis is it said that you may only pass on broken lines?

I can't find that in the road code. And one of the permitted passing pictures in the Road Code shows a car passing on solid white lines.

Be very careful that the vehicle you're passing is not slowing to turn right. The driver may have forgotten to indicate.

I vaguely remember some rule about that many years ago. Is it still valid ?

I, myself, hope that day never comes. The alcohol one I agree with. But give big brother that much power and they'll be monitoring your average speed between two points, if you indicated for 3 seconds, whether you checked your rear vision mirror every 3 seconds, what sort of mood you are in, etc etc.

this particular one i think was for a pedestrian crossing but without the zebra lines etc... kind of like the 'islands' that teardrop away from round abouts but these were kinda just there, i'd go hard and get google earth out and draw you a pic of it on a satellite map but im hungry and therefore cant be assed.

As far as i knew in NZ you can pass on any white line as long as it isnt a median strip... hence why i took going around the 'island' as a technicality.

With my rego... bike had been off the road for a month (my 28 days) and i hadnt noticed til that morning and didnt get the time to do it til today (which i have).

...and don't forget the massive amounts of $$$ lumped upon tax payers to pay for it, what a great day it will be...

As motorcyclists you should indicate for 3 seconds, or at the very least hope to God that car drivers do - No indicating and pulling out whenever they like is a major cause of accidents/death. As for mood and mirrors, that just silly [friendly pt]

No, if that were implemented with the whole population, there's no reason to believe it would cost us anymore than the price of a latte a week in extra tax.

You say that now...but then again it is your fictional story, so I guess you can tell it however you want.

The good day for mankind part is highly dubious though.

Maybe you need to think this through a bit better. Imagine that you take your vehicle in for a WoF and it fails for some minor thing that you can fix yourself. You take it home to fix it, and while waiting for parts your WoF expires. Now that you have fixed the minor defect you would be unable to start your vehicle to take it back for retesting.

So how do you take your vehicle for a WOF if you've had it in storage for a year?
    Speed doesn't kill people.
    Stupidity kills people.
