    Okay, what's the dealie?

whats going on? im buying my blade soon and wanna ride it legally! are there ANY courses to shorten the restricted? have they been permanently cancelled? i took a look on the site and there was nothing definitive. Perhaps this thread should be stickied as its a common thing for newbies to want to know about...

If you are 25 or over then its only 6 months to wait. Otherwise you can do a "cage" defensive driving course and then spend an hour or so with a motorcycle instructor flaffing about after completion. But you only lose 3 months of the total time. I think, may be wrong....

Do a Defensive Driving course - book via the AA - cost me $170

2 nights a week over 2 weeks, with a bit of homework.

This shortens the restricted period from 6 to 3 (assuming, as mentioned earlier, you are over 25)

From learners to full in 9 months is how it ended up for me.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...

    Shorten restricted

Yeah if you're over 25 you can shorten the restricted to three months or if under 25 to six months I think by doing a recognised defensive driving course. The stupid thing is some of them don't relate to riding a bike and the test is done in a car.But hey if it reduces the time in restricted who cares it actually teaches you some good safety skills. The one in Wellington costs around $160
4 nights and a practical test.Contact your nearest AA they have all the local contacts you'll need.
    Good Luck

Enjoy the freefall while it lasts the next bits gonna hurt!!!!

Depends if you are over 25. If you are, no it doesn't matter. If under, yes it does.In that case you have to have held your restriced for at least 6 months before booking the course. (Any class, so if you have a qualifying bike license but only a 1L , that's OK)

Do they also do an Offensive Driving course? I'm feeling a bit left out as I seem to be the only person in Auckland that hasn't done one.

They stopped the CBTA as apparently there wasn't enough interest, although there were only a limited number of people who were approved and the course wasn't allowed to be marketed (trial only). I had a couple of mates who tell me they tried to get on one but there was a huge wait (a couple of months) as all of the courses were full..... Seemed like a bit of a farce at the time..... The only way now as far as I know is the graduated driver licencing system......

I purchased my license through a CBTA course. Went from no bike with no license to a litre bike with a full license in 7 weeks. This should never have been allowed. Excellent.
