(oh yeah, in 2k, it's CMD to get a DOS box...)

    XP Home better than 2K?

    Wake up, you're dreaming!

I have 2 desktops of identical specs, 1 running XP Home and the other 2K.

The XP machine has had 2 reinstalls in 2 years, the 2K is still going 3 years after last install, and I absolutely THRASH the living snot out of it.

So, it's an emergency install of Kubuntu on my main PC (this one) tomorrow that I have been wanting to do for ages, and then a slaving of the drive to see if I can mount the bugger and save the... essential data... *cough*
Meh...good luck...you'll need it. The windoze recovery console does a not too bad of fixing these otherwise try the UBCD. If Kubuntu is anything like knoppix 5 it'll just tie itself in knots trying to figure out the corrupt NTFS.

Nope. Should work fine. I'm posting from a laptop with exactly that. Corrupt MFT, Recovery Console just barfs. Boot from Ubuntu LiveCD (no need to install ANYTHING) mount the NTFS drive (sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/hd1a /mnt; sudo ksh ;cd /mnt ; ls ) and there they all are .

You don't need to INSTALL Ubuntu , just boot from the CD. Only thing is, you can't FIX the problem on the dud drive, so you need another drive (can be a network drive ) to copy the *ahem*, 'stuff' to.

Well, as I had to go over to a mates and do an exchange of like minded digital media *cough* I decided to take the HDD over and get him to have a squizz.

Wouldn't work in his machine either, so out came File Scavenger!

    Bloody brilliant!

I think total loss of files to corruption was <1MB

So HDD has been formatted, and will probably be replaced in the not too distant future.

Cheers all for the input (I'm pissed I didn't think about the Kubuntu Live CD!!!)

Off to melt into a beer methinks...

What is the data worth to you?
    Serious question.

If the drive does not have a mechanical or electrical fault and if you DON'T fuck with the drive, turn the machine off at the wall and deliver the drive to me I can probably recover the contents.

If it is worth a lot, the likes of computer forensics could almost certainly recover it, even with an electrical or mechanical fault, however it may cost you quite a lot of money.

Of course "quite a lot of money" is all relative the the value of the data.

Finally had a look at Ubuntu. Seems the erm...shizz. I could finally be converted back into regular linux useage. Suse was pissing me off with it's dodgy USB support.
