    Speed bumps

Just about to get my new bike this week woohoo.. but was thinking about some places to start off riding - practising the basic's like emergency stopping, gear changes etc and thought of [what i thought] was the perfect place in onehunga for those who know it - the road that runs parallel to the motorway from around queenstown road towards onehunga.. It's on the manukau harbour side and there never seems to be any traffic there. So I'll plan on heading over there early (7am) on the weekend.. But...

I haven't been over there in a while, and then I thought shite they may have speed bumps down there. Which lead me to think, I hadn't even considered these amongst the list of things I should add to my learning list!

So I'd be keen to hear on the best way to deal with them.. i.e. obviously at slow speed.. But what about the ones with painted lines all over them.. in the rain.. ekk... and whilst turning. Any advice appreciated.

And if anyone can tell me if there are actually speed bumps over there that would be terrific.. !

Suggest you come along to RRRS - Next one is 18th Mar
It's been a rough day. I got up this morning, put on a shirt and a button fell off.
As I ran out the door, I picked up my briefcase, and the handle came off.
Now I'm afraid to go to the bathroom.

Cheers - yep got the application form. If only I was confident enough to know I could ride all that way to Whenuapai so soon I'd be there! Bit of a daunting thought given my virginty at the mo

    lol love your honestly Shady

Yeah I know the spot your talkin about, perfect mate. But I do think there is speed bumps. Bikes are a breeze with speed bumps, take them the same way you did on your push bike as a kid, slow down & stand up a little bit, just enough so the seat doesn't push ya bum 20 foot in the air

I cant think of anywhere in NZ ive seen speed bumps on a corner, and at any rate you wouldn't be going fast enough anywhere near a speed bump for it to me of any great concern. I would much rather take a speed bump on a bike than a car
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

Stand up on the pegs and make sure that you hit them at 90º.
Once you become confident you won't even need to slow down for them.

Speed bumps are a piece of piss on almost any bike. Ratty used to luv them best I got him over the Ireland Road ones was a bit over 130. Limited by the speed Iout of the previous corner. Von Klunken could take them faster except that it makes the stuff in the luggage crash around and I'm scared of breaking the bottles of beer. (Oh, and one of the bumps in Ireland Rd is on a corner - well at 100+ it's on the corner)

Just line up, take your weight on your legs with knees bent and tensed , I don't actually stand up. If it's on a corner be ready for a moments head shake. And remember that the "bump" is not always straight they tend to angle them across the road.

Happy to escort you up to Whenuapai if you want. Cages don't tend to muck about with the Uberfharter.

Or go along to one of the mentoring evenings at Westgate on Wednesday evenings. Escort can be arranged.

    On the other hand
if you don't stand up a bit on the pedals it can be pretty fun too ...well.. provided you have a soft seat. *bump* "wheee!"

I find that sometimes just putting more pressure on the foot pegs can help stabalise you a bit, it's really nothing major to worry about I would say (though I'm still a newbie). I love going over the bigarse speed bumps, those little jabby ones are a bitch though.. I have to slow all the way down for them

My wife didn't have the courage to head to Whenuapai even with an escort so I rode her bike there for her and she drove the cage - told her to call me if she wanted me to ride the bike back and she turned up on my doorstep with a big grin on her face for the achievement of riding home on the motorway.

Seriously though - riding the motorway at 8:00am on a Sunday morning it's a case of "choose a lane bud - they're all yours"

I'll ride your bike there for you if your confidence is really that low and organise a lift for you but think that you should accept one of the offers from the esteemed gentlemen to escort you there (as this will increase your confidence)

At least this way you have NO EXCUSE for not attending RRRS!
