    NSW anti bikie laws

Many of you are probably cognisant of the New South Wales anti bikie laws, details, and where the legislation is leading the general bikie public may be a little sketchy for many of us.

The anti association laws prohibit known gang members from fraternising, punishment is up to 2 years in jail. The law was rammed through parliament; a knee jerk reaction to recent violent crime within NSW perpetrated by gang members.

In the words of Joe Catanzariti [NSW law society President] :
"But the Law Society of NSW said police already had sufficient powers under the Crimes Act, and that the new legislation would do nothing to wipe out criminal conduct.
"The legislation simply will lead to people going underground and we're very concerned about that," president Joe Catanzariti told reporters.
"At the present time ... the people are visible in these activities and that does allow us to have proper justice."
Mr Catanzariti said he was surprised at the haste with which the laws were introduced and debated in parliament, adding he felt it was an overreaction."

The resulting law change had a polarising effect on not only the general public, but also the 1%ers and general biking public.

The UMC NSW motorcycle council was formed, the 1%ers all came together and hired some big dollar lawyers.......To say that was unexpected by the NSW government would be an underestimation!........Bikie clubs that only weeks ago had been killing each other now stood shoulder to shoulder against the government and legislation.

More surprising than former enemies coming together to give the government some stick, was the approach of your average harley club many of whom are sick of police harassment, constant erroneous bagging by the media and desperate to join an organisation that can afford them protection, give them a voice and help them out when the inevitable harassment from the authorities starts.

Think about the implications, and have a look around the UMC site for a better understanding.

Whilst on the subject of police powers, closer to home, this shit is scarey.

It gives police and other law enforcement agencies increased powers such as the ability to compel people to answer questions

A very interesting police person once said to me, say nothing especially if you didn't do anything. I asked why and was told police collect potential wrong doers, it's the courts job to sort out the rest. Made me rethink the way I saw things.

You do have the right to a lawyer and the right to silence after providing the above details.

A representitive of the US embassy,,,get over that man,,,you can go crying to them after the fact,,,,,because unless your a diplomat the NZ cops wouldn't care what you demand.

It does seem to be a poorly thought-out and populist piece of legislation. Better to just have the SAS go out and shoot all known crims.
