well it's actually quite old and tired (but cheap), but i got myself an XT600. I think a complete project rebuild will be on the cards (JE piston 621cc kit anyone?), but for now I'm happy to have a road legal bike to commute on and play on the gravel roads.

don't have a lot of time to play before heading down south for the nationals in january, but if anyone round wellington want to show me how to ride on gravel.....

Good One! Gear like that is pretty easy to work on, so a rebuild shouldn't be too tricky. Might see you on the Capital Coast Adv ride in a few months?

Mine is a 621 with the 97mm piston,you can fit a 101mm but need a new sleeve to do it.Not an off road bike,unless you are a masochist,but on tight nasty seal and gravel they are excellent,no unexpected quirks in the handling department,solid and reliable and easily fixed with a Bronson Stone on the side of the road.

I'm hoping to get the bike into a state where it's not so tired anymore. first thing will be a complete service and check everything, then if all goes according to plan, rebuilt over next winter. Best not to rush these things.

went for a ride yesterday, over rimutakas to martinborough then follow the road all the way out to glendhu/pahaoha. bike felt pretty good on the gravel, but the tyres are a bit shagged so can't really go round testing the grip. Rear locked up on grass going down a bank, but apart from that can't complain.

However, when i got back I cleaned stuff up and took airbox cover off there was a fair bit of engine oil in the airbox (about 50ml or so which dropped down the side of the bike when i took the cover off). I need to check to see if crankcase is pressuring, or is this amount of oil 'normal' ?

Haven't appeared to go through any oil while i've had the bike, and no smoke from exhaust....

Also quite impressed with the amount of fuel it goes through, about 7l over 150km

Overfilled is common on XT600s. The process of checking the oil level is arcane.Can only be done at full moon, by a virgin, and requires the earth's magnetic field to be temporarily reversed. *WARNING* DO NOT READ THE MANUAL. No mortal man has ever managed to read the manual , try to follow it, and not end his days permanently sedated in one of Mr Disco Dan's padded cells.

i think it is. did the - run bike for at least 10 minutes, let sit idle for a minute, then turn off and check oil without screwing the filler cap back in. shows over full. I'll get levels right, then look again. unfortunately no virgins were available at the time of testing.
