Riding on road standing up?

Wanting somebody to enlighten me as to if they have ever been given any grief for riding through towns etc standing up. I reasonably often stand up in 50kph areas as do many others I know. A road biker waved frantically at me as I went through Wakefield before New Years so I sat down and when I went around the corner there was a cop. Have you ever ridden past a cop standing and if so what did they do?

Cant really see how it is a problem myself as I'm still in full control and can easily use the pedals/levers etc.

We DR riders have a special dispensation from Land Transport to stand whenever we want. Buggered if I know why?

On a more serious note; I stand a lot of the time to see over stuff, have a change of position, be nosey, etc, etc, and have never had a problem. I'm not sure that I've ever passed a cop standing but there's certainly lots of them around and I've never had a "discussion" with them about it.

I don't know the law on it, but common sense says you must be in control of the vehicle so as long as it isn't trying to do anything stupid I can't imagine it being an issue.

Going home from the Dusty I was standing as I went past a cop whilst turning left at some lights and no problem.
The light was also orange...

I think road bikers are more inclined to think it's bad/illegal as if they tried it it would feel so wrong and unstable.

Only issue I can think of is not being able to use your mirrors.

I've ridden past cops in cars, and on bikes, and several standing cops. The standing ones have always been the hardest audience, in my experience, probably because they lack the acceleration of their wheeled cohorts.

Me and English don't go together so well but the way you have interpreted it would require that I wrote standing cop not cop standing wouldn't it??????

I've ridden past police while standing up on my trail bike and road bikes, with no problems. I've also seen police riders standing up while riding to get a better view when riding through peak hour traffic. As others have said, so long as you're not being an egg or can maintain control they won't have a reason to stop you...

i dont think ive ever gone past a cop while standing on the pegs. when i had the ginny, i used to do it often. the 250 has pegs that are too far forward to allow for that [bugger, cos sometimes it would be nice due to numb bum!!!] and the 500 allows for easy standing.

easy for me to maintain control... dont recall having trouble with the mirrors, but in the interests of this thread, i will take the 500 to work, stand up and see what the mirrors are like [hell, i cant see jack in em when sitting, so standing wont make much difference.

I think "Stand Over" tactics with police involved, get a much greater reaction from plod, sometimes.......

Having just returned home from a trip to the Mainland which involved some periods of standing while riding, it's not hard to adjust the left mirror to give a view while standing up, just a thought, but it's what I do.

My friends mate trained as a traffic cop in 1977. As part of the training they rode trail bikes standing up and were not allowed to sit down. They had to get used to controlling the bike while standing up as they had better control of the bike.
