    Speed Camera - Oh Shit!

    Boys and girls,

I got my first ever speed camera ticket through the post today. 109 in an 80, $230 towards Uncle Helen's Nazi party. Apparently got snapped from the other side of the road (think about it), first time I've ever gotten a speeding ticket without a Government representative wearing blue in attendance.

Location was on the approach to the harbour bridge, 8.00 am on a Sunday morning. I actually remember that day with some clarity, there was very little traffic...

Started riding on the road in 198? something? 1 ticket in 20 odd years is pretty good.

I'm going to write in and get the photo - it'll look lovely in a frame on the wall, just hope I wasn't scratching my arse or something...
It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

yeah, only one Ive had in 28 years of driving sneaked in the mail to me (about a year ago) and I had no idea i'd been snapped. I kinda figured that in all those years, and with the other occasions i know i've been snapped (evidenced by the lovely big nighttime flash - no, not by me...) that i just consider myself lucky it's all i've had. So, good on you for taking so long.
ps is it possible to scratch your arse on a bike at 109kph?
I lahk to moove eet moove eet...

    Interesting thought on speed cameras.

The gubbermint have announced that fines for speeding offences are to be reduced and demerits increased.

But speed cameras don't have demerits. And the gubbermint CLAIM they are not going to change this.

So that would imply that speed cameras will become less useful as a police tool, and we may see less of them ? Actually I don't very often see them at all nowdays. And all the fixed ones seem to be broken.

Or will the police use that as an excuse to claim that speed cameras have to have demerits ?

    Yes

    So ive heard
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

If you got snapped from the other side of the road by a fixed camera, you must have been travelling towards it, right? So if you were on your bike, how come they managed to find you given the absence of licence plate on the front of said bike?

    *so confused*

    Easy Fix.

Buy TWO of the LCD welding helmets that allow you to see what you are doing, but instantly go dark when you strike an arc.

Use the LCD panels to cover about 1/2 of your number plate each.

Use a simple oscillator to turn one LCD dark at a time. ie one half of your plate is always blacked out.

If you switch at (say) 30 hz, the human eye will see your plate normally, due to persistance of vision.

However, your number plate cannot be photographed unless the camera has an open shutter time of twice your on/off cycle time.

And at 30hz, thats 1/15 of a second, by which time your bike has moved around 1m at the 50kph speed limit. ie blurred unreadable photo.

Its an easy way of turning speed cameras off, no need to burn 'em with an old tyre.

Easy, cheap, effective, might even be legal !

Ingenious. Until you get the other half of your plate snapped by the next camera, and they match it up with the photo they pinned up on the wall from last time ...

    And I doubt it's legal.

Simpler to ride fast enough that the picture is blurred at whatever shutter speed they do use ...
