So I notice the other day that I don't have a VIN plate on the bike.

Fuck, i think to myself, where the hell did it go and how the hell do i get a new one.

After a few phone calls, i discover that the only place to get a new VIN is VTNZ in grey lynn and will set me back $50.. so off i go.

So i go through the process with the inspector, took about 15 mins and he goes off to make sure everything is in order, after 2 mins he walks back out and rips up the VIN application.

Oh shit, says I.

But no, turns out that my VIN number is the same as the chassis number and therefore I don't need a VIN plate.

Well bugger me! .. i just saved $50 .. ha ha.

There was a recall on the 06 SV1000S for the VIN plate BTW.

It's older vehicles that have VIN plates, all modern ones have the chassis number as the VIN. So I was told the other day.

Oh, and should be attached to the lower of the two left hand frame rails, above the front sprocket cover.

A VIN number has 17 digits,if it doesn't have 17 digits it's a chassis number.After 1995 all vehicles registered in NZ require a VIN,it it doesn't have a 17 digit VIN number,then is assigned one and it is riveted on.On any VIN number the last 6 digits is the chassis number.VIN numbers are a world wide thing - each country is assigned an area code,each manufacturer is assigned a code.The VIN number tells make,model,engine,trans etc - there is a method to decipher the VIN number.

My SV Vin plate was a sticker. I stripped it off with all the other crap stickers before I realised that it might be important.

Is this due to a VTNZ being nearby?
I had to get a bike completely reVINed (hadn't had plates for 12 years) and was originally was told that I had to do it through VTNZ. I thought why the fuck should I have to do it with VTNZ, I believe they are a privately owned enterprise. So I looked around and found another placed call VINZ that can do them.
Wish I'd just done it through VTNZ in the end though, VINZ fucked me about to much.
