    Just curious

If you pull someone over and give them a small talk and let them on their way without a ticket - does that count as a 'contact'?

The officer must have used his discretion. Like the Motorway Patrol chap last night doing 170+, but without any other traffic around the officer didn't hit him with a "dangerous" charge as well as the speeding.

Sadly no - but I do it a lot anyway.

For some they may see it as a disincentive to show discretion "The bean-counters only count tickets as contacts so why bother with warnings" might be thier thoughts.

PS A fair percentage of tickets I DO give out are 'compliance' ones.

BTW The 5-0 forget about somebody getting away as soon as they get to the first donut&coffee shop.

I think back in the days of the MOT they had official warning notices that you handed to drivers the same as an ION. That way there would be a paper trail and the warning would amount to something tangible that the bean counters would be able to include in their pretty graphs and therefore amount to a contact.

Yes. That's correct. They said "WARNING ONLY". I collected a few of them . For different things. I made sure not to collect another one for the same thing, for the rule was that if you got a warning for something, and then got pulled up again for the same thing soonish after, the proverbial ton of bricks descended on your head. It was a good scheme. And there was some system whereby Officer Snake knew that Officer Bumblebee had issued you with a warning last month.

I think they should reintroduce such a scheme. With computerisation it should be very simple.

They do it in the States, when I was out with the 5-0 there they logged it on the computer - and when any dude was checked it gave a list of warnings he had and what they were for.

I have tried to push for it here but I guess I'm not close enought to the shiney-bums that come up with the 'good ideas' for it to be accepted yet.
