    Auckland City ticketing footpath parking

Recently I received 2 $40 tickets for parking my scoot on the footpath downtown and K road. I have always parked on footpaths (10years) and do it in such a way as has been acceptable in the past to ACC. So whats up? Are others getting this too? Have they changed their policy of allowing footpath parking if done correctly? Maybe its about time some postive reinforcement of motorbikes contributing to reducing traffic issues in AC needs to be placed on their plate...

One last week and 1 the week before. I've just written a letter and yet to hear back. Its against the law. But an unwritten rule allows if done properly. I imagine only city dwellings scoot footpath parkers, will be wanting to do something here. But really, freeing up parking for cars is a great idea that you'd think would be incouraged.

If it's against the law, and there are no written rules permitting it, i'd say you've got a hard task ahead of you.

Parked lots of times all day at the Viaduct by the trees along the footpath.

Thanks for the tip. Will be more careful.

I park pretty much everywhere around town but it's down to choosing your location carefully.

If you can, park it near a stationary bicycle lock (those things with a big circle) or anywhere else with other motorbikes. Otherwise just hide the bike normally people don't see. I actually try never to park it infront of the public.

But yep, it's pretty gay that you got ticket.

    Not exactly.

    Road User Rule 2004.
6.14 Parking on footpaths or cycle paths
    (1) A driver or person in charge of a vehicle must not stop, stand,
or park the vehicle on a footpath or on a cycle path.
    (2) Subclause (1) does not apply to cycles if a road controlling
authority indicates otherwise by means of signs or markings
or if it installs facilities for the parking, standing, or storage of
cycles on a footpath or cycle path.
    (3) Nothing in subclause (1) prevents a person from stopping,
standing, or parking a cycle, mobility device, or wheeled
recreational device on a footpath if doing so does not unreasonably
obstruct any other user of the footpath.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, the bits in bold only apply to bicycles.

Motorbikes are classed as vehicles, and clause (1) prohibits vehicles from parking on footpaths.

There is a classification in the Rule regarding "power output" meaning that smaller bikes may be able to challenge a ticket.

A car can be a wheeled recreational device, but you certainly can't park it on the footpath.

I read it to mean things that aren't vehicles e.g. bicycles, children's scooters, skateboards, prams etc

Clearly, you have not spent enough time driving round Auckland City.

Any parking/stopping anywhere is OK, provided you have your hazard lights flashing, and don't make eye contact with the large guy in the white Commodore hurling abuse your way.

All the car parks have free bike parking, so I'll try and stick to them.
