Interesting one for me was question 33, which talked about the safest part of the road for a motorcyclist to position his bike.

Now I answered in the right hand wheel tracks, which is what I've always been taught.

I'm sure there's been a few guys on this site have been pinged for not keeping left in the lane.

Seems the police and the instructors don't agree on this one.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

32 yrs for this old coote since he done his bike and car licences , haha wouldn't dare have a go at them questions now !
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

I sat the practical and theory in UK in 2002. Passed first time and got 100% on the theory.

Then I came to NZ and had to convert my licence - theory test again 2004 - go 'em all right again.

Then I decided to get a bike licence in 2006 - did the scratchies and got 100%.

It struck me as common sense so was easy and logical.

Thought it was easy but got four wrong. I also disagree with some of their answers... some of the same ones shown above.

Doesn't matter though - I already have my license!

........so you first got your licence 6 years ago.. after riding for 18 + years (with no accidents) i dont tend to agree that some of the 'correct' answers are so correct.. so after time ya tend to sometime forget what one is 'suppose' too answer as 'correct'

Mind you I did swot and read all the answers, memorise them and then sit the tests. Surprised how rusty I have become though. Just sat the test in the link and got 3 wrong.

Yeah I came to the internal combustion engine late in life. Was a really serious cyclist (Touring, MTB and road racing) from age 14 until 28 then moved to London. Always hated cars and motorbikes coz I thought all them bastards were lazy and should be pedaling everywhere. got married at age 29 and the wife got fed up driving me everywhere and told me to get off my fat arse and get a car licence. The rest is history really.

They didn't have such things when I started riding. But I got 100%. But onbly because I answered what I knew they wanted, rather than the 'right' answer

Some of the questions and the 'approved' answers are contentious. And some (such as the 'slowing in a curve' one ) depend very much on specific circumstances. Slowing, *why* ? Because the vehicle in front has slowed a bit? or because the curve is a bit tighter than expected? Or because a golden haired child has just run out into the road?. It makes a difference

And on what bike? Engine braking won't do much on a two stroke. And in what conditions? I'd be hesitant of front brake on a wet and greasy corner for anything less than the GHC.

Depending on those aspects, any one of the answers could be correct.

I do not think they should include such "skill" quesdtions in a written test, they should be eveluated in the practical. The written test should stick to knowledge of the rules and uncontested principles.

    I got four questions wrong.

Ideal road position (I said centre, not right wheel track)
Which brake is more powerful (I said "both" thinking that combined was better than either front or rear)
Scratches in helmet affecting night vision (I said "makes oncoming cars appear brighter", should have answered "causes reflections")
Likely cause of steering wobbles (I said "light grip" instead of "worn steering parts")

*sigh* looks like the slippery slide has begun...

When I sat my learners car and bike I got 100%, my mother got 100% and my dad got 2 wrong (when they had to convert to nz licenses 11 odd years ago).

Now I got 3 wrong... meh, I disagree, as with some of the above.

Re the riding position, I agree with that too. A read through the book actually has several cases where it contradicts itself.

    Some aren't hard tho

Which kind of motorcycles are best for road riding?
    Off-road machines
    Road machines
    Road/trail machines
