Keys, ignition and security systems

Well as the proud owner of a new CB1300 (well nearly new 2004) i have had about a month of great riding. However i only got one key with the bike. Guess what i dropped the key on the road today after parking and later when i realised it was missing went back to look for it, after some time a nearby business person said he saw someone get out of a car, walk towards my bike bend over to pick something up return to his car and drive off. I anticipate it was my key. Anyway after some stress i then nearly have a heart attack to find its gonna cost me about $2,500 to get a new key (after replacing the security system). Ah i thought really glad i took out the comprehensive insurance cover. But alas get home read the policy and they will only pay up to $300.00. so, has anyone got any great ideas on how to address this issue? for somewhat less than $2,500.

if not you could try an source a second hand ecu and key
from the US/ebay and try the wreckers here or oz.

2.5k seems steep i remember reading in kiwirider a CB1300 test
they mentioned $1300 for replacement.
as soon as i got my cb900 i got a spare key made after reading that.

One of the downfalls, sorry, but you better hope someone hands the key in because a 2nd hand ECU and ignition will be like rocking horse shit to get. A USA or European one is no good, aparantly. The only option is new.

Seems i am a bit stuffed, have had it taken to GPHonda in Mt Maunganui, told them not to do anything until next monday, will check with the local cops, put an add in the paper, keep an eye open in the lost column. a wierd position to be in, gott spend the money as the bike is useless and worth nothing as it is.

Yeah its amazing that a whole bike can become just 'good for parts' based on losing a bloody key.

That faith is well placed....
I did exactly the same thing today, dropping the key to my bike - a Honda with the same security setup. After frantically backtracking and searching the area, I went to the nearby dairy that I'd visited a half hour earlier and asked if I'd left it on the counter. No, but a lady had found it and handed it to them in case someone came looking !
Good to know there IS still some decent folk out there...

Well you gotta have faith in something. I was in a obstetrician waiting room not too long ago with my good (and somewhat pregnant) lady when this guy walked in with his partner and sat behind us. My attention was peaked because he was dressed in leathers and carried a helmet.

Anyhoo, a wee while later we departed and headed downstairs and out the door and on a side table right by the entrance was a lone key with 'Ducati' emblazoned on it. Of course I picked it up and then had a quick nosey outside to see if there was a Ducati like bike around. There was - it would have been a gift if the wrong person had found it.

I took the key upstairs and asked said biker if he owned the Ducati outside... he beamed a proud little smile as he admitted that he did. It was worth the look on his face to hand him his key.

Honest people are around - I just hope that it was an honest person who picked up this particular key.

Find out what they do on honda race bikes to disable the security system (or what the dodgy cunts do to steal them). Probably a case of wiring a resisistor in somewhere or something like that an auto electrician wouldn't charge the earth to do. And then you could get a new ordinary key cut by a locksmith and all would be well except that you wouldn't have the fancy security system operating. No idea if any of that is viable but would be worth checking out.

Have you tried any of the places around where the bike was parked? Always possible the person works in the area. You could make up a flyer and leave it with each business so they can ask around staff and they would have your contact details just in case. You could offer a reward - it might be worth a petrol voucher or wine/choccies?

Definately try the police stations in the area, if they bothered to pick up the key, they might take the time to drop it in.
