Depends on how old you are. Way way back, not compulsory at all. Then required in derestricted (ie not 30mph) areas; but very few people , including snakes, bothered about it. Then compulsory always.

Crikey way back when, we used to ride our bikes after a shower to dry our hair. Now what I must confess is that I do miss my hair

I saw you cruising down the road on your late model Triumph Bonnie (at about 3pm. 11/10/08). Sure, it is a warm day, but for fucks sake mate your safety equipment was near non existent save for your burgandy lid. Wearing shorts and a t-shirt just aint on. Sure, it's your skin at risk if ya come off, but who the fuck pays for your skin grafts etc? Ya know who...we all fucking do in our ACC levies and taxes. You are a fuckin moronic bastard without a clue!

On a pain factor of one to ten, how bad is it to go sliding down some newly laid coarse-chip at 50 or 60 kph? Wearing a t-shirt and shorts?

It's about a 50 on a scale of one to ten!

And if you go sliding all smooth like, on some fresh blacktop, that shit gets right down into your wound and it doesn't come out. It burns more than abrades. And the bits that do come out come out because a big pussy shit ball forms around it, to get it out.

Goes on for years. And the shit that doesn't come out gets healed over and then works it's way to the top so you can see it under the old scar. Awsome, sort of like sleeve tatoos except nowhere as cool as sleeve tats, just f*cking ugly and horrible looking.

And if you're trying to pull some chick and you look like shit just remember it could have all been avoided. Very simply!~!!

Yep those were the days everytime you got a speeding ticket , there was also the klingon offence, exceeding 30mph with out a helmet.

They were the days because some computer didn't spit out a fine for something you never noticed. Plus the cops also gave you just a warning if you didn't have an attiude well sometimes anyway. They still had the odd arsehole.. This was while scummie was still on the chain tho

Everyone knows it hurts when you fall off. Some people though, believe they're so skilled they can choose the days when they will or won't fall off.
These are probably the same people telling newbies it's not if you fall offit's when.
It's good not to ride thinking you are going to fall off at any minute. But i think it's also good to consider that it could happen anytime and out of the blue, and dress appropriately.
