Fellas,

Long time no see and all that... I'm shortly relocating to somewhere that doesn't require daily motorway use. I'll miss the throbing sensation of Fatjim's arse wandering past my wingmirrors, but the plus side is I get to wake up next to an arse that idoesn't require regular waxing.

However, as part of the gradual decline of my manliness, I'm finding my Smart ForFour is a bit expensive on the daily commute (well, parking the f***er is). So I'm thinking scooter.

Here is my dilemma... I don't want a 50cc, cos although it will be 99% urban, I still want something that can do a motorway if it has to. At the other end, those who know me know "real" bikes and I are not a good mix. An old GN will be replaced by a brand new R1 by February, and I'll be back to writing critiques on Scumdog's mates, and eventually the public health system.

So... I'm in love with the Sachs Madass 125. I've seen a few posts on here. Build quality, chinese, etc... Bikers I respect like Whitetrash have shown interest, so I'd be interested to hear what the combined and up to date opinion is.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

1. You'll need to paint it at some point. The paint fades if you leave it out in the sun.
2. Practical maximum top speed is 70 km/hr. Over that it vibrates in that way that small capacity four strokes do, just before they asplode.
3. Get a Scorpio instead.

The Madass is a piece of junk.

If you have to get a scooter, get a real scooter from a proper manufacturer.

The bitterness of poor quality lasts longer than the sweetness of a cheap price.

So I own and commute on one.. was one of the first in the country to get one as I started to look at importing at the same time as the importer

First thing is there are two different bikes that get confused. Chinese copies of the Sachs (don't know what they call the little pieces of crap, frames break, engines seize, paint falls off etc etc ) and the actual Madass by SACH's but made in a German owned factory in China (Just like most scooters these days - piaggio et al)

I have owned my 125 for coming up for two years now and what comes below is the truth.

• The paint hasn't faded
• Practical top speed is 80Kph and will top out at 90 just (I'm 90Kg's and gangly and it manages to maintain 80Kph over the harbour bridge)
• Will do some motorway work but if you wanted to do more get a 250 scoot.
• Is amazingly frugal, I get (always) over 100Mpg and often over 110Mpg (its always ridden hard BTW my other bikes are "a little" bigger.
• Handles really well, suspension is scooter cheap but you can drag the pegs and stoppee (brakes are a lot better than the bike needs , so are lights and stiffness of frame)
• There is no petrol tank etc so doing stoppee and such like make you use all the weight on your arms. Very bad training for bigger bikes and a little scary if you have to do an emergency stop!!!
• Chinese electrics are awful. All my relays have given up and been replaced with BOSHE ones and they are still going strong.
• Petrol tap gave up the ghost and was replaced under warranty (cheap Chinese)
• Throttle body started to stick and was replaced with later modified unit (warranty)
• Engine just keeps going.. always starts and is simple
• General mechanical build is really good, none of the nasty cheapness of the Chinese ones (electrics are the issue, but seem easily fixed)
• You need to get a top box as there is no storage
• EVERYONE I mean EVERYONE will want to know what the fuck it is and stop you in the street!!!
• Seat is uncomfortable and I will probably get a different one made (will still work out as a very cheap scooter)
• I’ve found spare parts (Broke a mirror, indicator and a friendly dick broke the ignition trying to “borrow” it) all of which were under $50 bucks (tried to buy an ignition for a K7 recently??????? Or a mirror for that matter
Conclusion: It cost me $3300 on the road and probably less than $400 in the first years with services et al. Has now easily paid for itself and is free and easy now. A similar less stylish (in my opinion) Vespa etc would have cost me twice as much both to buy and to service etc. But they are “probably” better quality. (Not entirely sure about that as they also contain Chinese electrics)

Recommendation: BUY the sucker its fun, it s cheap to run and just accept the Chinese electrics are going to give you trouble (although believe the importer is changing them as they come in now). Figure in a rack and topbox (company in Wellington make the racks) because you gonna need the space.

they are briiliant.
it's always funny to hear people who dont own them rant on that they are shit.
they are the best bang for buck - i paid $2500 for it new and it's great.

Maybe you could talk to Damon at Cycleworks. Scotty at Clemengers got him to fabricate an exhaust for his Aprilia Scooter that saw maximum speed go from about 60 km/hr to over 100.

Just a thought...

Lane splitting on a scooter would be safer then on a "real" bike...just because its skinner.

altho the bike doesn't look like that any more...its now satin black with different headlights, micro indicators etc...been spending some time getting her sorted to my style.
