    2007 4.5%

    2005 5.6%

See this thread for a debunk of the studied lies of Inspector Dunbier
The press release talks about 50% off ACC injury claims for the wider Thames-Coro and Hauraki Districts. So you're right, it is not true that 50% of ALL crashes occur on the Coromandel, because it appears they never said that.

Here's a clip from the release.

"Police Eastern Waikato Area Commander, Inspector Glenn Dunbier, said over the past three years 50 per cent of New Zealand's ACC injury claims involving motorcycles originated from the Thames- Coromandel and Hauraki District Council areas.

"Over this period motorcycle injuries cost the country approximately $3.2 million dollars, and of that about $2.2 million dollars originated from claims in our area."

Analysis of the crashes shows that while some local residents were involved by and large most injury claimants came from Auckland, the Waikato or Bay of Plenty."

I was stopped at the checkpoints on the Coromandel and I thought they were doing an okay job. You can see where they're coming from and what they're aiming to do.

When you factor in that probably half the population of NZ live in the region, Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Tauranga, Whakatane etc then the numbers start to look a little better. I have to wonder what percentage of registered bikes reside in this area.

Mystic beat me to it.... Great playground that the Thames/Coromandel/Hauraki area is, it is just a short skip from the most populated area in the country, so perhaps the figures are correct...

Dunno where you get your figures from, but there have been a hell of a lot of fatal bike crashes in the papers - more than usual - lately. Coinciding with the sharp rise in petrol costs perhaps?

I encountered one on the way home yestereve.

18 cops I counted! And I see in the local rag, that burglaries are at an all time (local) high.

    They waved me through .

Misread what was said - thought the call was 50% in the Coromandel, not the entire region....
