Passing on double yellow lines

Just treat new double yellows like new (lower) speed signs - assume the last but one civil servant was less of a twat than his successor and obey his rules instead

They dropped the limit from 100 to 80 kph on a stretch of the local road into town a month or two back (just after they'd dropped it from 110kph) - ostensibly, temporarily, for 5 months, for road repairs.....
After 2 days of disgruntled locals, sort of, obeying the limit, (nearly) everyone just ignored it and carried on at normal speed. Within a week, they were knocking over the signs with their 4wds (they are good for something). The road authority kept putting the signs back up - complete with tyre marks all over them!
Well, 2 months on, they seem to have rushed through the repairs and I noticed last week, the limit is back up to 100 k, so, now its the stupid situation of double white lines at passing lanes, where the visibility is 400+ m, and the downhill traffic in it's single lane is usually stuck behind some dimble in an SUV doing 80k when the other side is clear........

I sympathize with you on this-recently back in the country. My only comment here is that you guys in NZ have it WAY better in terms of double yellows than either Australia or the US. I went up the main drag north of Auckland the other day to Kerikeri and my god, you can drive most of the way on the other side of the road its so free of double yellow, including a sizeble proportion of the corners FFS. I am really going to enjoy being able to buzz around traffic...it offsets the very low speed limits.

I once read of a Canadian couple who were very confused.

The claim was that in their country the yellows were for the few places you could pass.

And here there were all these yellows on corners...

The pricks that makes these decisions. They are inviting road rage.

Riding around that inlet is one of Wellington's joys. First they drop the limit from 100 to 80kph. Now this yellow line crap. That has to be one of NZ's longest unbroken double yellows. They need to build a rest area half way now for frustrated drivers to pull into and give up on their journey.

I rode around there heading out on my early Sunday ride. No matter how early in the morning, no matter what time of day, some selfish, ignorant, inconsiderate piece of shit, in a crapped out white van or 4WD just has to be at the front farting around at 64kph, braking to 34kph 100m before each slight curve in the road, admiring the queue of frustrated traffic building up behind them. Actually, ignore that last comment, these pricks don't give a damn what chaos they are causing and have no idea what those mirrors are for.

Trouble with that road is it's too narrow for a bike to pass without crossing the yellow lines and it's well travelled by Cops, so any pass is a risk to your licence. It wouldn't be so bad if they atleast got hard on the slow drivers - but that's a Tui billboard in the making.

Funny how until a few years ago that road was deemed safe to travel at 100kph and to overtake on for decades. It's not a high crash area. But now, with the flick of a bureaucrappers pen, anyone doing 89+ or overtaking is a reckless outlaw.

You can still legally pass as long as you don't actually cross the line. You most likely already know that...

Quite correct. The lines are "no crossing" not "no passing". An example of a car passing another within the confines of a yellow line can be found in the Road Code.

You must not cross or ride on the yellow line.

Of course, this is normally only of interest to bikes.

Trouble with that road is it's too narrow for a bike to pass without crossing the yellow lines and it's well travelled by Cops, so any pass is a risk to your licence.

They'd have a fucking hard time turning around and catching up to you to give you a ticket on that road.

Besides, its illegal to do a u-turn on double yellows.

Who makes these decisions and on what grounds I wonder? I'm not aware of a high crash rate around there and have only seen the occasional car in the water but don't remember any head ons.

It hasn't stopped the useless car drivers crossing the lines either - they couldn't stay between the lines when they were white in the middle and yellow hasn't helped that one bit.

Maybe the yellow lines were ment to be broken but at the hour they would have been done maybe the poor guy doing the paint simply feel asleep while the driver just carried on, LOL,

As for the "crash rate" well a good mate of ours(mine & balzys) did some mint driving around there, lost it on a corner and like the ambo driver said......He should not have walked away from it but he did with just a bump on the head(lucky boy),

Balzy is the one to ask about crashes specially if you know what he does for a living, LOL

That's true but if you pass and do not cross the yellow and something turns to shit like some cager getting themselves all fired up like believing that the double yellows mean no passing period, ya have not got much room.

I have seen it happen on all (without exception) of the rides I have organised.
Personally, I wont do it, in saying that, I have done it once (travelling behind a car at 70kph can get a bit boring) but its not a habit.
Those that have used this passing skill where I have seen it happen, do it safely...ie: where sight is good enough to pass without being a dick about it.
I dont condone it, and it does not worry me if others want to pass on double yellows, if it can be done without OMG popping into ya head, but wont do it.

I was asked by a non riding female once ''why didnt you pass those cars on H/Way 27''? ..... answer was simple '' there were double yellows''!
