Passing on the left? (lane splitting)

back in 2002-03 I got 4 tickets in rather quick order from the boys in blue for the technical crime of passing on the left and duely paid my $150 per crime for it and learned eventualy that crime does not pay and actually got a bit of a problem with getting insurance cover so I began the process of precision lane spliting at which I am now a Grand Master However I am now somewhat bemused at the lacklustre enforcement of the rule as I see daily the fellows doing it with gusto and using the hard sholders left and the central strip with care less abandon which means two of two things either I can relax to my old ways or you are simple going through the learning curve? which is it? do you think putting on the 4 way blinks and going like an ambo cutting up the cages is working let me know

true words I understand that passing on the right of a formed lane (such as the central reservation ) or on the left sholder the emergency lane actually incurs a tidy $600 fine? I dont like the connection between spliting and arsshole it just does not fit

As a rule, if you want to stay out of trouble, do not split on the left shoulder, do not cross the centre line, and just leave your right indicator on. Merging back into traffic once they reach a suitable speed (say 60km/h) is also good - splitting at 100km/h while traffic is already doing 80km/h is bound to attract attention sooner or later. Plus you look like a complete asshole.

I happily split past police cars, and they have never had a problem with me yet. Heck, I've had several move over in their lane for me, and had one fold his wingmirror in and wave me past so I could get up to the front of the lights.

Generally, just treat others with respect and our law enforcement community will treat you the same.

So its not good to split past motorway traffic doing 90 at 105ish ? I didnt think id perceived as an asshole but i could well be wrong. I tend to use whichever lane has the most room. On the motorway that tends to be the left of the outside (3rd) lane

Officers i have chatted to about the subject both said it was legal to ass on the left if traffic wasn't moving (technically) illegal if moving, and both said as long as they believed the riding was "safe" they'd ignore lanesplitters, so a personal judgement call i'd say... you know the risks.

I dont worry about cops while splitting, I was going along the N/W motorway and a cop with lights on was trying to slowwwwly make his way between the cars I followed him across the causeway as snail pace lile 5-10kmph cars where pretty much stoped , Had enough and passed the cop ( lights going , gave him the thumbs up on the way past and he just gave me a nod,) I think he understood i could spilt way faster safely and not get in his way, Or be stuck behind him. Got a few nasty looks and shakes of the head from the other bikers also stuck.

But hey I didnt do it like a hoon and eh stuff it .. I didnt get in the cops way

the trick is not to get caught and look out for the cops! no tunnel vision!

I would split on the right more but on onewa the general driving population has a lovely habit of sitting within inches of the center line, giving me more than enough room to split on the left considering it's about 4 lanes wide. Occasionally some berk will sit in the gutter and tailgate (so you can't go around) and mess everyone up but what can ya do?

Essentially I try to have a mental 'cop radar' (include 'cop' in your 20 second instrument scan) so I don't call attention to myself at innappropriate times doing anything that might be construed as against the law. So far has worked, but then that might be luck =)

fyi the buslane on the northwestern causeway is a much safer alternative to splitting that the cops are yet to pull me up on, i assume for the same reasons.

especially as right turning traffic will not see me if they are lucky enough to be let through across my path
