Advice, asisstance, help requested. Bike training and safety

Ok I hope I dont get flamed too much for this but I thought I would throw this out to the general populace here on KB.

I work for one of Aucklands local councils. Namely Papakura.

I have just been assisting one of my fellow employees with a computing problem and we got onto the subject of motorbikes.

My council, I have been informed, is well aware of the growing number of new and returning bike riders and have been contemplating setting up some sort of learning and safety skills training. The problem is, for them, contacting bike riders who are new or returning that may benifit from such training and those bike riders who would be able to assist in the training.

I have told the person I was speaking to about this site and the vast ammount of experience and enthusiam amongst the members. I suggested she contact the moderators with her ideas and ask for their input.

Because it is a council they are interested in their own area, but surely this could have a knock on effect if sucessfull.

I have also told her to contact BRONZ (Ixon).

I know a lot of you have the safety of bike riders very much at heart and this is an opportunity to possibly do something with regards to this.

The person who was speaking to me asked the very simple question

"Where does a new bike rider go to learn to ride?"

I was unable to answer it to my ownm satisfaction.

So what I am asking for is comments, ideas, suggestions. I will pass these on to the person concerned.

Anyone interested in assisting could PM me with contact details and I will pass these on to the person concerned also.

She has left for the day but I will ask her tomorrow if I can post her contact details on this site so that she can be contacted directly.

Come back to me my fellow KBers and show that we have our fellows well being at heart.

Moderators please contact me, Mentors please contact me.

might be better if you contact the Mentors first. They might not even notice this thread. Just check the search button. I would be very keen in getting involved in something like that here on the North Shore. (as a student not a mentor)

Are you aware of the RRRS course?
A couple of things they have done very well are to come up with an excellent syllabus and excellent documentation thereof.
It is therefore well set up for others to simply pick up and run with the material they can provide. This was done recently in Dunedin.
I know that they are open to others using the material and we have had several instructors through with a view to adopting what they like from the course.

Our experience is the biggest problem you are likely to face is apathy.

As The Stranger points out, there is the RRRS course out west, very good to do once you have done a few k after getting bhs and learners.

The instructors such as Qhkck, Riderskills, et al also offer varying other courses beyond just the basic BHS course.

Issue with getting riders to provide the training is exactly what KB went through. Just how do you measure who is fit to provide training and tips to newbies?

They're providing discount vouchers for training providers at the moment.
(Note that by ACC i assume you mean the Accident Compensation Corporation, not the Auckland City Council)
