I passed what appeared to be two licence and rego check police roadblocks today. I was on a brand new bike and got waved through - there was no bags to blow in and lots of clip boards about.

When I was some of your age I didn't always have that sh*t together. But there weren't roaming bunches of plod specifically checking it either. In Hearne Bay!

Couple years ago they had university students out helping set up road blocks all over town. When I got stopped for the third time I mentioned that I thought this was all a bit over the top.

The obviously bright(?) student type looks at the screen and says in a challenging manner.
“You haven’t got a sticker.”

“No”, says I, “ I look after a vehicle fleet so I sometimes drive different cars.”

I have mixed feelings about all this. It’s good to get un-roadworthy cars off the road, but it is a pain in the arse getting stopped while going about your (mostly?) lawful business.

My son got stopped a few weeks ago, for no apparent reason. He didn't mind that, but did mind having his time wasted being asked all sorts of questions that were none of the cop's business, such as, "Where are you going?" "Where do you work?" "How long have you worked there?" etc etc. He's not the most patient of people, and had to work very hard to hold his tongue and not burst out with "What fucking business is it of yours? I'm not breaking any laws, so piss off!"

Had a mate tell that a driving instructor told that approximately 60% of riders are unlicensed on NZ roads. I find that hard to believe. Anyone heard of anything like that?

There's a lot with no license, but more common is the wrong license (i.e. "riding outside license conditions"). Most common one is a big bike on a learners/restricted, no L plate on learners etc.
I have met people with no license on thou's, and i have met people with full's on 250's, ya get both extremes round here

Well, it really isn't too much of a bother to get your full licence and ride with peace of mind.
If people are too lazy to do that... too fuggin' bad.

I'd like to think that these stops help locate stolen bikes (and cars), as well as folk up to no good. My information is that this questioning is simply to try to establish whether all the information being provided is pukka. I was stopped at a roadblock just outside Whitianga the other day and had a load of questions shoved at me, none of which I particularly minded answering.

I think that figure would be believable, if by 'unlicensed' it means no BIKE licence. A shit load of weekend warrior types have a cage licence but think it too demeaning to go back to an 'L' status when they get a bike. Let alone be limited to a 250 as well. So they don;t bother. As they do HAVE a licence (class 1) it's not regarded by the law as a serious matter.

these wof/reg checkpoints seem to be country wide, went through one today at orewa. wondering if the coffers are getting a bit low after xmas they need to collect a bit of revenue to top them up.

Got a city council ticket slapped on the car outside auck hospital for no WOF. $240 from memory. Arse biscuit alright......

The Lada doesn't need WoF or rego....although it has a number plate.I've never been stopped to explain....they rush it through the spot checks pretty quickly.
