Custom exhaust systems?

I'm considering a custom set up for the Striple (as well as various after-market options).

Firstly, am I better off to cough up the big dollars and stay with the Arrows/Mircons/Zards/Akrapovics etc? Or will I get a really good system manufactured locally?

I'm wondering about about issues like loss of power or decreased durability/longevity etc. Is it hit and miss with a one off NZ exhaust manufacturer? (who doesn't do extensive research and design testing)


Secondly, if I go the way of getting something manufactured locally - who would people recommend in the upper north island (preferably Auckland). I've had a couple of people suggest Custom Chambers in East Tamaki? Opinions please...

I'd import one if I were you, the Kiwi made stuff isn't bad from what I've seen, but nothing like the Akra/Arrow/Micron systems. Not all of it mind, but given you'd have to work with a Kiwi tradesman, it becomes a bit of a no brainer.

Shame the Micron is out of the game, some of their gear is seriously nice.

Yeah the Microns are nice. I quite like the Akrapovics also (although they are just a slip on).

My my main question though is whether or not a one off made here will be on par with big overseas brands (in terms of performance and quality). If there is a difference performancewise would it be substantial?

Well, even if were deficient by 5 peak hp, your butt would never notice. But if it rapes the curve, you'd likely notice that (your butt might even tell you it's faster because a dip in the midrange makes the top end feel like it comes on stronger). Harris Pipes here in the SI did a system for a local racers 675, reputedly to very nice results, and apaprently looks the part too... that'd be where I'd start if I were looking for a locally made system for my Trumpy.

There's a guy out in Waitakere (I think) making exhausts. I've heard a pipe of his on a Hornet 900 and it sounds NICE. I'll probably be going to him when I'm wanting exhaust work done on my bike.

As far as slip-ons go, and I may be bashed over this from what I see they all are basically the same length. They all run a perforated core of approximately the same diameter. The performance aspect is then done (core size and length). Noise is a result of packing and db killers and these vary. After that it's physical appeal and quality of build. The later varies considerably from the pieces of shite to works of engineering art.

Also remember that the right sticker on the side of the muffler can make it look like it has 20 more hp just sitting still.

Well, I'd still give him a ring... the racer that he was working with is the Trumpy dealer down here, so given the close relationship, it seems possible that he'd be able to get a bike to mock up with if he hasn't made one already... he also spends time dyno tuning the systems, which you indicated was important to you

That was the impression I had from reading the article in BRM or KiwiRider, or where ever it was I was hoping that a call at least would be worth your time

Price for full system was prohibitive - cheaper to buy the Arrow 3 into 1 (at just under $3000). Logistically not worth doing with Harris pipes.

Bike will go into Custom Chambers next week some time. I like the look of the twin stubby mufflers but will be getting something stubbier with a cone shaped end. Also replacing pipe from the headers back (cutting out the catalytic converter). Old system will just bolt on if needed.

Wouldn't it pay to stick with someone who has proven results with your machine?
I know that some of the big boys put a lot of R&D and dyno time into their product. Time and cost that can only economically be recovered over many units. I can't see that low volume manufacturers can match that and remain cost effective and if they did.

You could get in touch with these guys and see what they do for a striple !They seem do do their homework and have dyno charts for all they sell !

I get my pipes made by a guy in Dunedin. I do some drawings with dimensions etc and he builds them to my specs. I have had him made 5 cans for me in the last 2 years and he does an awesome job making them out of stainless steel. The last ones I had made only cost me $400 for two cans!! and then I got the link pipe made locally once again out of stainless. All up it cost me about $1000 to convert my bike from a single rear exhaust into twin exhaust. I doubt you could get an aftermarket system for that price and the local one I am sure will last just as long!
