    pist off with pist ons

After waiting over a month for OEM KTM piston, and ending up with wrong size I'm still trawling for a piston. I should have Burt Munroed one up out of coke cans myself.

Turns out Mitaka only make a couple of KTM pistons but some info giblets I came across are: Their pistons are OK but their rings wear fast, some say had bad experiences others say no probs. Both views could potentially be true if production consistency a problem. Found one seemingly very reputable UK 2 stroke engine rebuilder has started selling them as quality now much better.

I'm now looking at one of these Pro-X jobs. Anyone had any experience with them? Neither the Pro-X or Mitaka look like they have the Vertex type anti-friction coating (dark stuff on skirt apparently is some silicon/teflon brew?). Is this coating anything to write home about?

According to the researchs of the RZ fanatics, Pro-X and Mitaka come from the same factory. And are (as one might expect) pretty much of a muchness as regards quality and usch.

It is somewhere in the forums here. Dunno where though, but there's LOTS of discussion about pistons. RZ owners talk about very little else (except the vagaries of powervalves) . There's a search function

Was told that the Pro-X black-cage bearings aren't so good, don't like high rpms. Pro-x piston with KTM bearing (or Pro-x silver cage) should be ok.
    Cheers,

yeh Pierce I rode those bikes on a Mr Moto last time out and they seemed very plush but in saying that I did ride 4strokes (from on here) 08Crf450 (before he got the Husky) out the sandpit and it seemed very heavy through the trees, I was already tired and gave the bloody thing back to him pretty quick. So each type of riding is different. I'd have the 450 for the farm rides but my Ktm200 for anything a bit more difficult. Each to their own I suppose!
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!

'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '

i still dont get wat you mean by "easier to ride", when i had my 2t it was more just point and squirt, which was as easy as it got!

450s are easier to ride, too a point but the extra weight and power can wear you out real fast if the going gets tight and tough ,wheras the 2t is more flikable and more manageble in tight terrain and if ridden cleverly just as fast...

Interesting but doesn't sound too promising to me. If they can't make a bearing cage properly can you really trust the rest of it? Been trying to track down an D size piston for my 200 and apparently none of any brand in the country. Have you tried a Pro-X Warewolf?

Bloody NZ Peso now down to 50 cents US. We're all in for a nasty price shock when fresh crop of imports starts ariving in the country.

It's not necessarily that the cage itself fails, but rather that the black cage indicates a lower-spec bearing than the silver series. Haven't tried a pro-x yet.

Came across another piston brand while stooging around: Namura. Quality reports don't appear too good though.
