    Dodgy passing

We all go on about idiots on bikes passing lines of cars on the wrong side of the road into a left hander with no visibility and oncoming traffic, yes? Well, I do - to myself anyway.....
SO today I joined their ranks......north of Pirongia, heading south on SH39, stuck behind an old Citroen, waiting waiting for the chance to pass...comes a wee straight and I thinks "just go ya wuss......" and as soon as I move out there appears, fast coming t'other way, a car...so I have to crank it and dive through the rapidly closing gap.
Not really too dangerous in reality but unnecessary, avoidable risk...and further damage to the biker rep... "Look at that fucking maniac passing like that..!!!!!! Oughta bust him in to the coppers!"
So I continued on, feeling a little remiss......until about 100km further on, I meet real loonies - a herd of H-D's, riders all with Germanic helmets, roaring (literally!) past a huge line of cars, wrong side of the road, etc etc etc.....After that I decided I was a very minor sinner only.....
'twas a great day for a ride though....

The missus was following me down SH 16 on Sunday arvo. It was a bit gusty & her 250 was getting blown around so she held a steady 90 kph.
A line of cars passes her on the other side heading north
A late model black Triumph Speed Triple , loaded with gear , rider in black blasts past her at speed on her left, hooks right then passes me on my RHS.
In 35 years of riding I dont think I have ever passed another rider that way.
He showed less consideration for his fellow riders than the worst of the dopey car drivers.
Is it me who has it wrong or do some of us have a hell of a lot to learn, I bet we would all abuse hell out of a car driver who did that, what makes us so special.

You seem to be confused as to us, me, we and them ! Or is it biker versus cager ? Enlighten me, was this fiend your brother, friend, work mate ?
the way you said "us" made me think brotherhood !
I forced my Mrs to learn to ride left on the highway (unless she see's hazzards on her left, such as undisclosed driveways, crossroads, parked cars) You can resite all the road code, ride safe quotes ya like here, but i use my lane to its fullest and so now does Heidi ! (I'm just guessing here that your good lady was in the right hand wheel track with an L plate on ? The wind was a bitch on sunday, i know !)
I watch out for my woman from the right hand wheel track just behind her, with her visor in her mirror so she knows just where i am ! Because what is going to take her out is not just whats in front but what comes from behind while learning ! I will be balsy enough to say i know whats a km behind me and place myself (if anything closes on us) as a block to cover her ass !
We are us, Her and i, when we're out together ! Not you and i and the Kb forum or every other biker out there ! Danger may come in all forms, a car or a bike or a dog, bird, stoat, fish (ok floundering here) !
This fella on the triple sounds like a (david help me here) red misted knob jockey who should know better ! But then he is prolly an experienced rider who found that manouver the simplest of passes (don't excuse it) ! But then did you or you good lady see him coming, closing on you at speed ? Did you move over to let him through, knowing you were prolly doing half his pace ?
I have been red misted, i have been curtious, i have seen L platers make silly passing moves into oncoming traffic, i have made them !

Everybody is a fuckwit my friend !
Kb And the general biking community is fantastic and i would never pass a biker on the side of the road needing help and would always offer any advice or help where i can !
But on the open road everybody is a threat ! When Her and i are riding together it is just us ! The rest are the rest !
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

Always remember early 90's im on my gpz900r, bloke on zzr1100 rockets past me at warp speed, to fast as he now fast approaches a tight right hander, he hit the front brakes locking the wheel for a few meters then goes down, I almost hit him as he rolls across the road.Bad news was he was hurt (he had normal jeans on,lost a big patch of skin off thigh) .While waiting for the ambo ,tells me the bike was only a week old.Im guilty to but ill blame being young dumb and full of come.I overtook a few cars on the motorway on the shoulder doing warp speed, just as a cop on his harley(yes they used HD cop bikes in Perth )came down a onramp, got pinged dangerous riding.

I find the best way to govern yourself when considering passing is ask yourself -

'Is it safe if there is another bike coming the other way at speed?'

    'Well is it punk?'

Best draw this to katman's attention so he may go reprimand them for ruining our good reputation.

I draw a big breath through rounded lips, roll my eyes, shake my head and grin, then set the timer to see how long it takes for this post to degrade to the point it ends up in PD.

As a side note, 28 years ago when I started riding some of the appeal was the 'rebel', slightly anti-social appearance of motorcycling.

While I sympathise with you in this situation I have to agree with sinfull, these days it is simply me,you,us, depending on the number of riders accompanying versus the rest.
These days while riding and or driving the car, I seem to be seeing many many more bike riders doing stupid things than ever before.
Once you only ever saw riders lane splitting, when traffic was at a standstill, these days it seems fair enough to split at any speed with no regard for safety, their own or the other motorists.
Riders these days seem to be road rash proof too, so many fools riding with no protective gear except a lid, on large, medium and small bikes, do they not know what is in store for them if that fool in front stops dead?
Gives us all a bad name! this sort of stupid behaviour.
Funny thing is, usually the idiot on a large bike splitting lanes at 80 or more K's per hour is alos the idiot with nothing but a good helmet in the way of protective gear, perhaps we could weed them out at birth? you know a multi choice questionaire at licence time, would you lane split in traffic moving at 80 or more K's per hour?
/Not sure. B/ maybe. C/All the time! D/ all of the above!
Naturally, any answer would mean an instant frontal labotomy and the removal of the balance Gene so they damn well can't ever ride anyhow.
Every day above ground is a good day!:

Yeah, same. Followed the f*cker to where he was parked (a disabled space, no less) and flamed him in front of his six-fingered, banjo-playing boyfriend.

Then I reported him to the boys in blue.

I had some twat on a litre naked bike launch himself at me last friday afternoon on the Rimutakas. Was having a nice, fairly quick ride home (Upper Hutt). Heard a bike gunning ahead of me heading toward featherston and as this mensa candidate exited the corner (way too fast by the way) he launched forward in a straight line across a gradual left hand bend and into my lane. I hauled it left towards the bank while still keeping it on the road and prepared to kiss my handsome, well toned ass goodbye.

He past by me so close I could almost smell his breath, how he didn't hit me I'll never know. If I felt I could have caught him I would have chased him down and had a pleasent discourse with him regarding his complete lack of riding ability and common sense (read: smack seven shades of ever living sh@t out of him). I stopped at the top, hoovered down two cigarettes and offered thanks to God, Alah, Buddah, The tooth fairy, my ability, the easter bunny, David Crosby, Jimmy Hendrix and Jeebus (Didn't want to miss anyone out).

@ssholes like that should take the bus or learn to ride. And if I ever find out who it was they'll need a geological survey to remove my size 10 Technic from his rectum.

So what a couple of you are saying is that it is everyman for himself, fair enough. But how do you defend yourself against the type of idjut that passed my wife or aimed at Insanity.
We all rant about the standard of car drivers but the standard of bike riding is no better it is mostly simply done at higher speeds with more catastrophic results. If the average car driver is a moron, why when he swaps his car keys for his bike keys does he think he has become the undiscovered V Rossi .
Who is safer the driver/rider of moderate ability who is competent & safe or
the supposedly highly skilled rider who believes the road rules are not applicable to him, statistics tend to suggest the latter is the real problem
