NZ 6L licenses for visitors with no licence whatsoever

I have a visting japanese youngster in December/January. The person is 15 years old and I am tempted to get them a Class 6L license while they are here, and take them on little excursions down to the beach and back, and so on. Obviously, they have no drivers license of any type at home.

IF I went ahead and did this (there are quite a few other concerns) does anyone know if this is even allowed in NZ?

They'd have to do a BHS test, and the scratchy. But , given that, I can't see any reason why not. Just the same deal as a 15 yo kiwi kid.

They're not an exchange student, are they? Because if they are, I think it is one of the rules of their exchange that they are not to drive/ride a vehicle while in New Zealand. If it's a personal thing rather than a student exchange, I can't see any problems though.

Thanks. Well, technically they are not. They are just coming over to see us and look around. We met them earlier, and they love our area and love us too, so they want to come back, but off their own bat - not part of any organised thing.

Clearly, there are may more issues to it than I have raised, and the rest of the family have bikes and bike licenses, so most likely we will just pillion them with me. It just would have been another thrill for them.

Hey Steve, this sounds great and I am sure your guest will be very happy. Just one small thing, it might be an idea to check with the parents. Japanese kids are kept on a tight leash and it may not go down to well

Yes, well, it occurs to us that we will have to mail them a copy of the road code to study, so the cat will be out of the bag. Bummer.
