I have marshalled a number of cycle races and can confirm that some of the 'more competitive' riders are a real PITA - aggressive, foulmouthed and totally uncaring of the rights of other road users, including their fellow cyclists.
At one point, I was escorting a group on the outward run when a bunch on the backward run came into view. I positioned my motorcycle 1m inside the centre line and called my group to stay left of me. An oncoming cyclist trying to 'overtake' the six abreast bunch cut in between me and my group and gave me the one-finger salute.

Once we had passed, I U-turned and rode up behind him - still on the wrong side of the centre line - and ripped his race number off his back, thereby disqualifying him. WAS HE PISSED! He lodged an appeal and accused me of trying to deliberately run him down from behind with my motorcycle. Other riders in the group endorsed my version and the disqualification stood.

I no longer help out with cycle races - I don't need that stress.

Within any population, you will get a range of people and personalities from super nice, to super fucktard. Brush, tar etc.

I know one young guy who threw away his chance to win a second Tri world champs because his mate had an off, and he waited with him at the side of the track while the Ambo's were on their way.

Then you get the Jeremy Y**** of the world, drug taking aggressive assholes. 95% of cyclists on the road are normal people, look to your eft and your right as you sit in your office / workplace - likely 1 or 2 people that you see in the office are cyclists (and I'm betting you get on okay with them).
It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

This must be a new definition of the word "safely" that I wasn't previously aware of.
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin (1706-90)

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending to much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it." - Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

"Motorcycling is not inherently dangerous. It is, however, EXTREMELY unforgiving of inattention, ignorance, incompetence and stupidity!" - Anonymous

Hah, yeah. Safe for the cyclists I meant.
