Question A question about rider etiquette at the lights.

Recently the mighty Betty and I were waiting at the lights, we were at the front of the queue (Btw - Betty is my CB250RS and the ripe old age of 25yrs).

Anyhoo another rider on a 250 lane split and stopped beside me at the lights (no probs, plenty of room). When the lights turned green the other rider basically burned off to get in front of me. It wasn't a biggie but it did get me wondering about rider etiquette in those situations.

Look I know Betty isn't the most powerful bike out there and I wouldn't have had an issue with it if the other rider had been a bigger bike cos they'd be off and away before Betty and I could even change outta neutral....but cos the other rider appeared to be on a bike of a similar power he was really pushing it to get out in front.

What are others thoughts on this?

I've been hit in the leg twice by retarded selfish little monkeys. I chased a ZXR400 rider down one morning who clipped me trying to get past. I was stationary, he was moving. The red light obviously didn't mean much. Anyway, when he freaked out and crashed because he looked in his mirror and realised I was right with him, he had no Engrish. Or license. Something else must have been going on because the cops took him away.

Another time a CBR250RR rider pulled up alongside me, hit my knee hard enough to make me consider crying as an option, caroomed off into the SUV next door and then weaved through the traffic crossing in front of him to get away from us. Red light again.

I think it's rude. Dangerous. Ignorant even. Especially when you wonder where they went when the lights go green, and they then pull some astounding, physics defying moves to get back in front of you.

Seems to be a small bike thing though. Don't get guys on R1s or Beemer 1200s pulling that crap.

You were both splitting lanes... expecting more is splitting hairs...

If you were in a hurry, you would've been away first...

Straight line take off, let them go. No problem, they take off at the speed they do, you take off at yours. Easy, until it is a turning intersection, I would hope that any rider that is 2 abreast stopped at a light controlled intersection would consider the other at take off, and mind the line they take around the corner.

Well I think that if the other rider had cut across you or just revved excessively, then that would have been quite rude and poor etiquette. Otherwise, I wouldn't take it persoanally.

What's to point of riding a bike if you have to be considerate? Hmmmm? It's our JOB to annoy other people. Then be smug about it.

    LOL.

@Ms Piggy, if some dolt interferes with you on the road, skip the etiquette and give him a piece of your mind - don't be shy. If they tell you to get bent, well maybe they are just another asshole biker, and if you can't beat them - join them.

But really you will find nearly all bikers are perfectly noyce folks - quite happy to have a little race from the lights with you - its great fun! Join in! Race ya!

Do you need a quicker bike? Zoom zoom!

"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
    "Wow, Great advise there DB."

i had some dumb ass do that on a freakin roundabout!
i was in front and not moving due to tons of traffic. he split to be just behind me. lane clears, and we both move, with me ahead slightly. i veer right as i spotted a car had stopped at the ped crossing... had to move as i would have been close to hitting their rear. the dumb fuck on the sportsbike had decided it was a good idea to OVERTAKE while both us are trying to go around. how the hell i didnt hit him when i moved left ill never know. would have been easier for him to wait a few mins until we got to the end of the bridge, as we were both going different ways.

so its not limited to small bikes only, as this was a lot bigger than my lil ol 250.
