    Buying into brands

common among harley, buell and triumph owners...

getting all the branded gear, supporting the brand, wanking on about how this brand is so much better then the rest.

guzzi riders dont seem to do it!
its not to common among the japanese brands, not to the same extent.

being loyal to the brand, riding with only the other people that ride the same kind of bike....

what the fuck is wrong with you that you have subscribe to a corporation like triumph.

    with statements like

"i brought a triumph because it has heritage, and im of British decent "

"i just wont be seen on a jappa, if my mates see me il never live it down"

"im still loyal to the H-D brand"

why do you feel the need to be part of something like this, are your lives so empty you have to be spoon fed marketing and products to feel a part of something so superficial?

Its to do with disposable income... and image. With some(as you said)marketing thrown into the mix. So get back on your Jog, and wear the honda logo with pride.

Some people lack identity so try to buy it through the crap they own. Pretty simple really

yeah, like those people, also lacking in identity, who make up a 'crew' and plaster it's name across KB endlessly

    gee, who'd do that?

I buy what I like most, regardless of brand.
If a particular brand has proven themselves to be worthy to me in the past though, I am likely to stick with them.

    You trolling again Carver?

I love my Triumph, however I've never ridden with only Triumph's..........ever! I guess I'm not a very good Triumph Rat member, but I get a magazine or at least I used to.
I like a lot of Jap bikes too and Harley's, Buell's, Aprillia's etc, so in fact I'm not a die hard Triumph man after all!

Thank's Carver for helping me see the light. I'll sell the Trumpy right away!

As much as I make fun of my "where's my Harley shirt because I must wear it when riding" mates the fact is HD accessories are readily available and (sometimes) affordable. Sort of a 'they do cause they can' situation whereas other manufacturer's don't market anything like that on the same scale. Sort of a 'they couldn't if they wanted to' situation.

Another reason the baby boomers choose British and American bikes is they still carry rightly or wrongly to a lesser or greater degree of prejudice towards the WWII enemy of their parents generation. ANZAC spirit was built on the death of young men like yourself and buying Jappers is considered condoning what happened in the war. Rightly or wrongly it's a very real emotion.

Moving forward to Generation X the prejudice could be Made in Japan used to mean what Made in China does now. The Japanese haven't always churned out quality reliable machines although the same prejudice could be levelled at HD and British bikes but Easy Rider was a cool movie.

Believe it or not some stuff happened before you were born which shaped opinions today...

This can be explained by "Cognitive Dissonance" theory...

As some have already said, it is to do with identity and acceptance by the peer group. The theory goes that, as social animules, we all want to "belong" and be accepted by our peers. So we try to do what will get us accepted. It also explains why people with one product will try to talk everyone else into buying the same - then they feel as thought they are an accepted part of the group...simple really innit?

Funny what you remember forty years on...

It doesn't start out this way, but when you come to the realisation that you bought an over priced POS and are unable to keep up with the other brands what the hell can you do?
