The roundabout at Panmure

The roundabout at Panmure, you know the one. Who's stupid idea was it to put a two lane roundabout there when half the people using the roundabout don't know how to use a standard one lane roundabout yet alone a two lane one. I nearly got sideswiped by someone who decided that they no longer wanted to be in the inner lane and just swerved straight out. I've got to go through the roundabout 6 times a week (I have to take a paper at the Auckland Uni Tamaki campus) and everytime I got around I really really wish that I didn't have to. It wouldn't be so bad if it was a single lane roundabout because then you'd only have to watch for idiots in one direction.

How does everyone else feel about this roundabout?

Kiwis in general can't understand roundabouts. I Think their great (yes kiwi). the problum with panmure I think is the number of exits, not itself a problum but with i think 3 lanes comming by the pub and one or two lane exits round the mobil and town. It confuses the bumb CTs in cars.

but note (I see your from there) the cavendish drive roundabout is working well, ok I know theres only 4 exits but its a start.

Kiwis in general can't understand roundabouts. I Think their great (yes kiwi). the problum with panmure I think is the number of exits, not itself a problum but with i think 3 lanes comming by the pub and one or two lane exits round the mobil and town. It confuses the bumb CTs in cars.

but note (I see your from there) the cavendish drive roundabout is working well, ok I know theres only 4 exits but its a start.

I try to avoid any place where cages can be on either side of me. I usually ride through in a low gear so they can hear me at least, in case they don't see me.

Y...E...S Am from Graymouth (said i was kiwi) but having lived overseas (yes there are other places away from your valley,and some nice roads just out of it, when you get tyred of watching the roundabout) have seen them work well. mostly in the UK where people know how to use them

Its a f%^&*n bullshit roundabout, it's part of the delivery area i cover at work, the amount of times i've almost been wiped out in a car let alone on my bike is stupid (maybe it's me :spudwhat: but i dont think so) although it's alright after say 10pm, but yeah dont like it at all, its more like a shooting gallery, trying to get out of Jellicoe is a mission at peak.

I also do Uni papers at Tamaki, and I travel that roundabout most days. One day on my way home through the roundabout, I was in the left lane turning off onto Lagoon drive, and in the middle lane was an asian lady in a white honda concerto who wanted to get off as well, that was fine, except as it turned out she wanted to get into the left hand lane on Lagoon drive instead of sticking to her lane as we got off the roundabout, needless to say I was filling space that she was moving into. I got forced into the kerb locked up and went down. And she continued blissfully unaware of the carnage she left behind. Bike wasn't too bad, mostly cosmetic, but I had a sore knee, and couldn't do athletics for a few weeks.

I still travel the roundabout most days, but I trust nobody on the roads, and I make sure I'm either ahead or behind people in lanes so they've got room to chop and change without warning, cause you just can't trust em.

Please note that people always do this corner cutting thing on that roundabout, I think it might shorten their overall trip by about 2 metres... definitely worth it.

Yeah man, the St johns crew order through us heaps, cocked it up heaps too , just one off those freakish things. Get it right most of the time, but we always hook em up good deals. And if they come into the store and get called out we deliver it round top the depot for them for free. It's the Ellerslie store on Main Highway, Sudeep also does a few hours there on Wed, Sat, Sun nights.
I'm there most nights till pretty late so if ya in the area swing by and i'll hook ya a deal (same goes to any KB'er) if you wanna work something out for your ambo night, let me know

The worst are the idiots who get into the innermost lane in the evening , coming from the city then cut right in front of you to dive up Jellicoe Rd to go to Glen Innes.

And the ones who shoot out in front of you when you're about to turn down Queen's Rd. Or as someone said the ones going down Lagoon Drive who can't stick in lanes. Or - ok heck just *ANY* of them, they're *ALL* insane.

I bollocked a taxi driver there last week , looked at me saw me coming and indicating as per new road rules, and promptly shot out in front of me. Fortunately I was expecting it, that sixth sense you get for upcoming idiotcy. So I caught him up and had a little talk. Very apologetic he was by the end of the talk.

I reckon that Indian taxi drivers have overtaken Chinese women in SUVs and Volvo drivers as the worst drivers on the road. As soon as I see a turban in a taxi I prepare for the worst.

You are partially right....Kiwis don't understand roundabouts. However, where you are wrong is in thinking the number of exits is the problem. It is the Entrances that are the problem. Remove them & roundabouts become positively jolly things.

No, that won't work, I still need to be able to get onto the roundabout. Now if the entrance were made, say, one metre wide, that might work. Though I suppose some idiot in an SUV would manage to get it stuck in the entrance

True the cavendish drive one works reasonably well. Well kinda, you still get weird stuff happen there as well and it's not taking nearly as much traffic. Also if you don't want to there's tonnes of ways to get around without going through it if you don't want to. Though they've replaced the roundabouts on puhuni road (might be still replacing this one, been a while since I've been that way) and everglade drive. Which has certainly helped make it easier to get out of everglade onto redoubt road in the mornings. (The queue used to stretch about 200m down everglade, now it's down to about 100m).

The Panmure residents' association has been talking for a long time with the City Council about improvements. There were some good designs proposed a couple of years ago, then they all got stuck on hold until the fate of the Eastern Highway was resolved. Now that's resolved we're going back to demand a redesign. It hopefully will be included with the work being done in the near future around Panmure.
