I am coming, still would like Kiakoura or similar. Nelson is a bit too far for a day out. Fencepost says it will be a fine day north, too. See you 9.00am at the Peg.

Someone was asking where the Peg is- its the last pub on the North end of town, Belfast, in the 60km zone, just before the two lane motorway starts, on the LH side of the road going north.

Had a good ride today went to Waiau then up the back roads to Kaikoura, group then split up and 3 of us headed back to CHCH and the others carried on up north. We left Kaikoura and got past the golf course and up the road a bit and poor old Garfield69 had an argument with a 4wd and he came off 2nd best as he was hauled off in an ambulance, his bike is a mess but the good news is that he is ok(poor bugger).Banged up a bit and grazed.Waiting for a full report from him when he is ok to let us know.

That's not a good thing to hear at all.

    Heal soon and fast.
Feel the fear and do it anyway

    Status Report

Well its taken a couple of days to get my thoughts together after the incident. Just got an infringement notice in the mail today so looks like it was officially my fault, Doh! Although I still think it was a pretty queer move made by the 4WD, but it is ultimately my responsibilty to make sure I am in a position to avoid other vehicles (seen or unseen) on the road whatever they do.
I still think myself pretty lucky to be able to walk away from the accident, or should that be hobble, although not quite as lucky as I initially thought.
The day after my left hand swelled up like a rubber glove someone had used as a balloon! So after an X-Ray I spent today in hospital waiting for an operation to wire a wee bone back to where it belongs, it never happened so now I have to wait till monday for the op.
Apart from that I've got a couple of stitches on my right knee and a rather large right ankle that the bike was using instead of an oggy knob as it slid down the road, but nothing that won't heal itself reasonably quickly.
As for the bike, I'm not really sure, I didn't get a chance to inspect it myself at the accident scene, so I'll just wait for the insurance assessor to tell me the good or bad news.
So the lesson for today is:
If you think you are safe to overtake, . . . DON'T . . . untill you KNOW you are safe to overtake.
Thanks to Cowboy and 200Busa for doing all they could and the follow up calls/texts.
I think it might be a wee while before I'm back on a bike, but maybe have to catch up for a beer. I believe its my shout.

Good to hear you're mostly alright mate, hope the operation goes well. At least you can learn from it, a lot of people never get the chance. Take it easy, and hope to see you back on a bike soon.

How did the op go Garfield? And what did the infringement notice say? Careless use? Or something worse?
I hope you are feeling better soon. Could have been *much* worse.
Let us know how you are.

    After the Op . . .

Well the Op is over and done with, the surgeon seemed happy enough so I think it was pretty succesfull, time will tell but I'm optimistic. Just got to wait five weeks in a cast now but I'm still not complaining, and I did buy a lotto ticket last week, but I think I must have used all my luck up already.

As for the infringement notice, it just says "overtook on right at intersection, unsafe manouevre" $150 fine. The accompanying letter says the investigation has been completed and that the file has been submitted for actioning.?
I even got a phone call from Francois (the 4WD driver) to see how I was doing which was nice.

Still no word on the bike but didn't expect to hear for another week or two, and it doesn't make much difference to me anway in my current state.
Work is getting pretty busy at the moment so I'm keen to just get my head down and tail up and forget about all things bike related for a while, and maybe see how I feel when spring/summer starts rolling around again.
So hopefully this is the end to the story.
