Lardy is a status symbol in the islands...but an ability to store huge amounts of fat and then eat very little for a long time would have been a distinct advantage on long canoe voyages.

Solution: starve the buggers thin or make them paddle instead of flying.

Dude, you ever heard the word "SARCASM"? You missed the whole point of me proving that treating people differently just because they are obese is just as wrong as treating people differently because they are disabled.

that opinion is a product of your time and your culture ..................

you only have to look at paintings by some of the old masters ---- or, for that matter, 'girlie glamour' pics from the 1950s, to see how widely ideas of female pulchitrude differ within the space of a generation or two ............

and that's just in the 'free West' - when you think about what OTHER cultures consider beautiful [f'rinstance, some of the pacific islands] then it's obvious that one man's belle is another man's belly ........

Since we are sharing stories... I remember flying to Singapore years agao and seeing this asian dude spit a bit loogy into the isle.... I almost puked into my dried roll and weak tea! AND he used his cellphone a few times.... I almost found a new rectal carry case for it.

Did you read that article? People with this gene simply need to eat less calories, and more high quality nutrients. No drama. Its not rocket science.

The strength of the genetic influence depends on whether an individual has inherited one or two copies of the FTO gene variant.

A person with two copies of the FTO variant is likely on average to weigh 3 kilos (6.6 pounds) more than a person who does not have the FTO variant at all, and if they have only one copy they are likely on average to weigh 1.2 kilos (2.6 pounds) more.

Biffs right. They have found a genetic variant that influences weight.

Influences. It isn't a "YOU WILL BE FAT" gene. There is no such thing as a genetic given in regard to obesity. The figures you quoted are minuscule and the lower figure is actually with in the weight range that anyone can change their weight by in the space of 24 hours.

Their isn't any genetic excuse for obesity within the normal human weight spectrum, which is what we are discussing. Not minor variations in weigh given the absence or presence of a particular pair of genes.

Which is why I said read the article. It isn't talking about obesity. Obesity has life threatening implications. Being mildly overweight (in some gym bunny's mind) doesn't.

And tall people can't fit their legs and feet into the space available, so they have to splay their legs out , and then they clash knees with the dude next door.

Two large guys can only fit if they both sit at an angle
You are correct Ixion - anyone who is not completely average in all their measurements (like myself) should sort their shit out and get their love handles / guts / elbows / knees the hell out of my space, freaks

I agree that obesity (fat) is what the duscussion is about but you claimed that
It's a myth that genetics set your weight in any way. That appears to the study that I posted is wrong.

I don't think I have stated that obesity is genetic related.

Genetics don't set your weight though. Those genes give you the potential to carry that much extra. You can control that with diet and exercise.

You are trying to sell it as an absolute and it isn't. Even the article talks about influences and potential, not absolutes. It is a myth that genetics determine your weight. Diet is everything.
