Unhappy My bike has no motor!

Welllll.... After spending an arm and a leg and another arm getting new tire, service, repairs, hot grips (south island is cold!) etc done at the local bike shop... 150kms later my engine has blown up... Its done the big end bearing in the no. 3 cylinder rod meaning the piston is knocking round all over the place (from what I remember, what the bike shop guy said).

Bike shop said with the random spares I have (if they are any good) its going to cost $1500 at least to get it back on the road...

Or I could get another motor to toss back in this frame.
Current frame is great, fairings just got a small crack, but otherwise the bike is in great order....

Sooo... does anyone have a motor to fit a 1990 ZXR 250A?
Or can you think of any other solution?

    Many Thanks.

Most of that would be labour? The bikes not worth much now - you could get yourself a haynes manual and attempt it yourself - $1000 buys you a lot of tools - you'll use them again. I didn't think I could do it till I tried.

Me too. I didn't have any choice (no money) about doing my engine rebuild on my own; jonbuoy's quote is very true, `I didn't think I could do it til I tried'. Engines are simpler than I thought they were.

Plenty of smart people around here, bug them and ask them heaps of questions, I did, they didn't seem too grumpy

He's right too about another thing -- the bike's not worth much now. So you might as well try and fix it, you won't decrease the resale value too much at any rate.

just so you know mate a motor from a zxr250c will bolt straight up into the a model frame....

contact "Brett" from here, he sold a zxr as bits once, motor was blown from ,memory but i think he may may still have it be good for spares,

there is the remains of justsomeguys one at corsa wreckers here in auckland www.corsa.co.nz but it has a rod thru the crankcase snapped cams etc, ,not much left of it.

    hope that helps buddy

Yeah... after you both mentioning it I am seriously considering it... Would be an interesting learning experience... Which can only be good!

What would your estimate for a engine from a wreckers be? Just approx...

What has always put me off till now has been the memories I had of trying to fix my first few cars as they were all knackered - staying up till the early hours trying to figure out where I'd gone wrong hoping I'd get it back on the road so I could go to work. Its a different game when you got the time and don't need to rush. If you got other ways of getting about it can't hurt to have a go, see how you feel after stripping it down, crank the stereo up and you might even enjoy it.

    Cheers

Well i have a car that is my main form of transport due to various reasons... The bike is purely a pleasure beast (and a great one at that) and I've been missing it terribly but have 3 options left really...
    * pay for wrecker motor and put it in/shop do it
    * get parts and put in myself/shop do it
    * Sell bike as is... I doubt would be worth much...

I can always try myself, and if that fails I shouldn't have spent much more than time and some tools which can always be used later... and can go down a wrecker engine path then if required...
